Prince: topic of conversation while in line for Dreamgirls

So, my significant other and I are waiting in line to get into the 4:15 showing of Dreamgirls today (Wow!). A pair of couples, one set obviously straight and married, the other two were guys and may have been lovers, fell in line behind us.

They start talking amidst themselves and I'm not really listening, casually munching on my popcorn and sipping on my soday while people watching, when I hear one of the possibly gay guys mention what sounded like "blah-bity, blah, $125, blah, blah, Las Vegas". Obviously, my s/o heard it too, because he just turned and stared at me. That was all I needed.

Reaching across the velvet rope, I said "Excuse me, are you guys talking about Prince?" There was an uncomfortable silence for a moment, which I attribute to them getting their bearings after determining that I had been listening in on their conversation, and then the guy that brought it up looked at me sheepishly and said "...yeah?".

I'm all "You must be going to the big New Year's Show."

He's all "No, I was just talking about going in general. You know he's performing at the Rio?"

I'm all "Oh, yeah. He's a great performer. I'm a really big fan." And I'm standing there with the biggest grin on my face with this little circle of people staring at me, and was beginning to feel slightly Kathy Bates-ish...when...

"Ring-ring." The guy I'm talking to's cell-ie going off....

It's kind of clear that the rules of social gatherings have been cut off by this unexpected phone call. Everyone shifts on their feet kind kind of nervously, all eyes searching the ground for something interesting to look at, while we let this guy take his call. I prepare to melt back into the wall behind me, my enthusiasm sharply curbed for the moment.

The guy who answered the phone says, "Hello? Yes? Heeeeyyyyy (you know, like gay guys do), we were JUST talking about you...!"

I froze. My s/o froze. The married couple the guys were with froze. Simultaneously, my s/o and the guy from the married couple said: "Is that Prince calling?"

Turns out the guy on the phone was talking to his good friend, Owen. I must have missed THAT part of the conversation.

We all shared a big giggle before we were let in to the movie.

That's a funny story and I think we have all heard somone talking about Prince at one time, whether it's positive or negative in some unexpected place. I listen and sometimes I'll jump in and start talking There have also been times when they are making some really nasty comment that's I don't appreciate and I'll walk away to remain cool, calm and collected. Then there are times when I say exactly what's on my mind and I'm sure they weren't expecting that.

My hair stylist was talking to a client the other day about the Superbowl and they the client told my stylist that Prince would be performing. She got all excited and said oh wait till I tell my other client, she's a big Prince fan. biggrin So when I came in to get my hair cut she said are you into football, are you going to watch the Superbowl? All I could do is smile and I said no I don't watch the Superbowl but I already know Prince is performing so I guess I'm going to. She said ohhh, I was so excited I thought I was going to tell you something you didn't know yet and surprise you. I said I'm sorry to ruin it but thank you for thinking of me.

That was a funny story and it showed that more than just you was listening in on the conversation.
