Diamonds and Pearls DVD = Meh

OK, I admit, D&P is not my favorite by a long shot. Other than Thunder, Gett Off and a couple of others, I find the album to be lack luster and Ho Hum. It also sports some his most successful tracks like Cream and the title track...both which I think are terrible.

I received the DVD twice as a gift this year. Not a big fan of the album, but it's still Prince...and STILL in his hey day. I figured I had an hour to kill so I popped it in. From the get go...PURE DRECK! WTF are those weird Arsenio Hall look-a-likes that act like Morris and Jerome? The entire concept of the train leaving for Minneapolis and that chick in the white suit etc... ill WHere did the concept of this come from? The videos are totally uninspired Live-at-Paisley-Prince-Romps. And they all look the same. The only video I was looking forward to was Thunder Live. Yeah right! Only song listed where the full song is not featured...and just an intro at that.

I never thought D&P as a video album or even a cohesive video companion to the album. Makes me wonder how 3 Chains of Gold fared with this treatment.

I quite like the D&P dvd. I think most of the vids are some of his best from the 90's, and the little interview snippets with the band members are quite insightful...plus it's got a full live performance of Live 4 Love tacked on the end. cool

I haven't seen this, but D&P represents something very bad in my mind. I like the music okay (there are even a few classics on it), but it's Prince pandering rather than leading, and I don't like that at all. It might have saved his career, but it tarnished his integrity.

just my humble opinion, however

( D&P DVD = Meh' ) = no Dah!
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

the interviews were ok...though I don't know who they are. And considering his video output from the 90's is pretty natch, I can't argue that these were some of the best from that Decade.

- Yes, I have mixed feelings about it too. I love the NPG band (not the rappers) and some of my fave Prince songs are on the album, but for the first time Prince became a trend follower...
If the DVD is the same of VHS, it is nice, but not that great. ´Live 4 love´ rocks, some nice interviews, the live version of ´Willing and able´ is real good and the music videos of ´Gett Off´ and ´Money dont matter´ are some of my faves.

A great collection - glad it's finally on DVD.

I don't think Prince was following a trend, I just think he wanted something a little lighter fare than the previous 3 albums. Think about it - SOTT/Lovesexy/GB dealt with some pretty heavy spiritual stuff.

I'm sure he wanted to just make some dance music again and get some songs on the radio/TV.

Awww. UTCM is so cute. And the musical score is really good. Although me thinks I was "influenced" when I watched it. biggrin

You forgot Batman, also light fare. I thought GB was pretty light too. And I have to say I can listen to D&P over that one anyday. I dunno, I think he was done with the Linn Drums and the whole Purple Sound. I see the time as Batman comes out...he's on top. GB comes out...it's a complete disaster, though creatively he was "going there". So what does he do? Creates a new "revolution" and goes for the Pop jugular.

yep, with the band, Gett Off, Live 4 Love (and maybe a couple other songs) the fleshed out songwriting & arrangements, no bs, you could argue it's one of his strongest albums

but it tasted bad to me
