Whispers & Echoes?? During the Grafitti bridge / Diamonds & Pearls time period there were rumours of an album called Whispers & Echoes...
Does any1 know anything about this project, what songs were supposed 2 be on it?? or is it just that, a rumour??? "Time is a train, makes the future the past"

Wow, I thought that it was only me who remembered that. I do remember the NME listing song titles that were meant to be included on the supposed album, a few of which actually ended up on Carmen Electra's album (Fantasia Erotica was mentioned, as was Good Judy Girlfriend). They also mentioned Sexy MF, My Name Is Prince and some others which I don't think I've ever heard of since. I suppose that it must have eventually become the Symbol album.

I once heard a very different version of My Name is Prince that was supposedly from the Whispers and Echoes project, was miles better and funkier than the released album version.

'Whispers and Echoes' is a *RUMORED* album project that, according to legend, eventually became the 'Love Symbol' album. Most of it was recorded in late 1991,and Prince supposedly wanted it to be released only a few months after 'Diamonds And Pearls' came out. Here's a list of the some of the tracks...
"My Name Is Prince" "Power From Above" "Fantasia Erotica" "Sexy MF" "Sacrifice" "Whispers and Echoes" "Allegiance" "Go On (Witcha Badself)" "Rave" "Rave Church Style" "Do U Wanna Rock?" "M.D. (Miles Is Alive)" Most likely, this project (if it ever existed) was just a "work-in-progress" situation, where Prince compiled a bunch of tracks that he was working on and someone mistakenly assumed that it was his next finished album. The majority of those songs were given to other artists, and it's highly unlikely that Prince would have released those songs on his own album. The tracklist above would make a very uneven and inconsistent Prince album, dontcha think?

Certainly a very inconsistent 'Prince/Carmen Electra' collaborative effort... Incidentally, that last track is a misnomer. The correct title is "Letter 4 Miles", a track that Prince and Michael B recorded on September 30th 1991, two days after Davis' death. A horn arrangement was added to the production afterwards. . Whispers & Echoes never really existed.
Prince put out the rumor himself that the title of his next album would be whispers & echoes just to find out who was leaking information to the media (hence the name, he never actually recorded a song with that title). The tracklist was indeed just a compilation of tracks he was working on at the time for Himself, Carmen Electra & Margie Cox. Soon after there was a major clean up on security etc. at Paisley Park, which is why post outtakes are so much rarer to come by. Most of the outtakes circulating from after this time come from promo material given to dj's etc, rather than leaks through Paisley Park staff and engineers.

I always thought it couldn't have been a real album. It all sounds too un-focused and inconsistent.

I guess he was cleaning out the staff that were selling him out and giving away his outtakes. That's why it's so hard to get any outtakes from the 90's onwards.

Well,I did a little more "research" on this mystery project and this is what I found out.Immediately after the 'Diamonds and Pearls' CD came out,Prince wanted to release a new album. However,I'm not sure if 'Whispers and Echoes' was the project he wanted to release at that time.Uptown mentioned a 16-track album he was also working on (this album contained the song "Letter 4 Miles").Supposedly this was another movie soundtrack for a planned film!
Anyway, this is the correct tracklist for the rumored 'Whispers and Echoes' project (this version was compiled in late 1991)... "My Name Is Prince" (with different lyrics) "Power From Above" "Rave" "Whispers And Echoes" "Allegiance" "Do U Wanna Rock?" "Go On (Witcha badself)" "Sacrifice" "Sexy MF" "Well Done" "Tasty" "Fantasia Erotica" By early 1992,more songs were added to the album... "Race" "She Spoke 2 me" "Goodbye" "However Much U Want" "Like A Woman" "Tow" "Rave Church Style" (a gospel version of "Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic"?) This is all just a rumor and we're just having fun with it.But I think it shows just how prolific Prince was back then.He was often planning and recording several albums at the same time. That's why there seems to be alot of rumors and false information regarding these projects. But it's fun to investigate this stuff!
