PrintableThe most influential black artist of all time has passed away and when we were blessed with him in his life here he was the torch bearer.James Brown started it all and continued throughout his career 2 hold that torch.James Brown was the head teacher of the old school in the way he handled all aspects of his magnificent career,his songwiting,performances but most importantly his influence on generations of artists then and now.
Prince in my opinion was(is)the star pupil in that school and took James Browns influence on himself and raised it 2 the next natural level but 2 crown him Godfather is silly.That title goes 2 James Brown There will only ever b 1 Godfather of Soul the same as there is only 1 King of Rock and Roll u know u want 2...so do it

Prince can never be Godfather Of Soul. That will always be James Brown. Although, I do remember reading an article that said that Prince had earned the title "Hardest Working Man In Showbiz". That was right around the big payday - circa 1992-1993.
Now that is the kind of title you can "inherit". |

Hello....there is only 1 J.B and only 1 Prince and i'm sorry but i think most of his songs r rock and fun and not soul.He has got soul songs 2 but most of his songs rock and funk.  [Edited 12/30/06 15:20pm]  | |

Besides, why would Prince even need a title like that with the name he´s already got ? He´s PRINCE, the one and only, that name alone is so unique, it´s his real name, and he´s much , much more than a soul or funk musician. The title " hardest working man in showbiz " is a title well deserved by ( and only reserved for ) Mr. James Brown but I think there´s also no doubt that Prince is, was, and always will be more hardworking than anybody in showbiz , considering his huge output, his discipline and his mercurial swiftness. That doesn´t mean he should take that title from Mr. James Brown....because those titles are part of what James Brown was about....they´re part of his name, his identity. I love me some Prince but James will ALWAYS be the ONLY Godfather of Soul. Like 3232 said, Prince is "His Royal Badness", That's THE title for Prince. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that | |

I think a lot of u guys are missing the point.Absolutely no disrespect to the Godfather of Soul,i'm simply saying our Prince should carry the touch. James Brown was a huge influence on Prince and he should incorporate James into his act he always done. |

Soul can not be a style of music but it could be any sort of music, as long as it is truly made from the soul. Yes, Soul Music is a STYLE of music. You are trying to make like Soul Music and music sung from the soul are the same thing. Gimme a break, really. If there were no James there would mostly likely be no prince, JB created a sound that people weren't hip to and made it his, granted people took ths ball and JB gladly passed that torch to the others. but like someone said here, Prince even knows better. | |
