Prince Gets Props In Blender Magazine!

I don't know if any of you have seen the latest Blender magazine (December 2006). They are having this rock star wars thing in it which is basically mock up of the Final Four college basketball tournament. They have the whole bracket lined out like they do for the final four except it is with rock stars. They have four categories like the divisons would be all coming against each other and each month people move on until you get the champion rock star. The four main brackets are words: with people like Bob Dylan, 2pac, The Smiths, and U2 etc. Grooves: with people like James Brown, Outkast, Sly & The Family Stone, Elvis and Radiohead etc. Tunes: with people like The Beatles, Kiss, MJ, Madonna, Al Green, Nirvana etc. And Riffs: with people like The Rolling Stones, The Who, GNR, Led Zeppelin and Prince & The Revolution etc. So last month Prince (who was the 4th seed) was up against R.E.M. (1983), the 13 seed. And last month he won. Cool, but no surprise really. But this month he was up against Metallica (1986). I saw it and figured that they would give it to Metallica because that is what the public seemingly would like. Wrong! P won and listen to what they had to say:

Metallica '86 were the greatest metal band of their age, at the peak of their shredding power. Shredding? Yeah, Prince '84 could do that. He could also do ballads, funk and bump-'n'-grind so potent that Tipper Gore founded the PMRC, all while singing circles around James Hetfield. And while Cliff Burton-era Metallica were probably a tighter ensemble than the Revolution, Prince could've been backed by the Bad News Bears and still won.

I know it's just for fun and is pretty much up to the editors but I still thought it was cool. It's good to see the man gets props for his talent as opposed to just being a pop singer who has been around for a long time. Anyways, thought I would share. Sorry, I don't have a scanner otherwise I would have just scanned it in. biggrin

The whole list boggles my mind!
eek
The only one that should be there is maybe Billie Jean. Like I said; it's all up to the editors. I just thought it was cool that he got some props for his versatility. And that list proves how surprsing it is that he got the respect that he did, especially since Blender is mainly marketed to the young teen to young adult crowd who (forgive me for saying it) don't for the most part have a clue as to what good music is!

Blender's so phony. They're one giant advertisement for the music industry. They're always jerking off to whatever crap the usual Top 40 artists release, so long as there's enough hype behind it.

Now he's going against the Stones in the next round.

In the Riffs category...Prince vs. the Stones?

eek

would not want to make that decision.
