Just like many artist r influenced by Prince, what influences do u think Prince got from James Brown? Because i feel if the world didn't have the God Father of Soul, Prince's music would be different..hint the song "IT'S GOING TO BE A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT" just to point out a few song tha sound like James, including cover songs he's done of James B.I think James is as be of the biggest influences to Prince just as Sly Stone is...look at the set up and sound of Revolution and the Sign 'o the Times and LoveSexy bands from 1985 to 1989 it's all James Brown.

Isn't there a video of JB, Prince and MJ where Prince makes a total ass of himself?

It's there in everything, really. And it's not always the sound either. It's more about the attitude and being so audacious, bold and forthright you convince others you are a demigod when you're really flesh and blood and full of fear, superstition and unbelieveable lies like everyone else.

prince would've had to invent funk himself if it weren't for JB. i remember me'shell ndege said a while ago, "if elvis was the king, what does that make, JB, f@*#ing god?!" true pioneer. template for great bands, band leadership, etc. his grooves live on. its why prince has maceo now.

Prince loved James Brown, he took a lot of his on stage presents from him and said that JB was the first pro entertainer he went to see in concert. This is all too sad."Pretty Man" on the Rave cd was a James Brown song!

Which makes me think that the people who put on shows that allow nasty clips like that are actually getting their reputation from such clips. What a way to get your fame - by televising constantly a bad moment a person is having. But whatever it takes to get along these days, huh? Prince in producing is where he has influienced the most! Listen to lets say Pop music & or Rap in the early 1980's. Now listen to Prince music in the early 1980's.

Now listen to producing a few years later & all the way up to this day.

Samples, Drums Loops, Keyboard Loops, Recording Style in general.

Prince is a blend of several major influences, including his own imagination. But there are times when his act is nearly identical to James.

I didn't notice this early on (i was just a stupid kid), but it became clearer as he moved more into leading a big band.

I'v always seen a major influence of James Brown all over Prince through his dancing and singing, all the way, especially in Prince's earlier performances.

The dance steps, the splits--definitely--the way he moved his feet so quickly when he danced/dances...and the screams--most definitely, without saying. Also, when he did "Housequake" that says it all. When he did "Forever in my life" in "Sign of the Times", the part where he plays like he's crying and screams and throws down the mic..and it sounds like he's taking you to church, definitely reminds me of when James Brown used to sing "Please, Please, Please"

Even Al Sharpton stated without James Brown there would be no Prince or MJ. He was a major influence on both of them. They all have one thing in common and that is they were all able to cross over racial lines with their music, which is a beautiful thing.

I thought even Black Sweat was heavily James influenced--not the sound of the instrumentation (the synth & linn are all Prince), but the song itself, the rhythm of the lyrics, and the phrase "Black Sweat"

You're right, I thought about that too when I was looking at some of James' video footage, does have that James Brown influence in it. James did put out a song called "Cold Sweat."


I remember also when the "Blues Brothers" characters emulated James Brown. Goes to show you how many people he touched with his music. I'm sure going to miss him, but his music will keep his spirit alive because he seemed to be such a lively spirit in life.
