Could Prince be the next Rita Moreno?

Rita Moreno was the first performer to win all four of the coveted performing arts awards: Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, and Tony. As we all know, Prince has already acquired an Oscar and 4 Grammys. I'd like to see him nail ALL FOUR major awards!

In yesterday's New York Times, in a review of the new Broadway musical "Hairspray," it was suggested that Prince could bring a much needed dose of credibility to the show.

"And please tell me this: Why, in a show that is about white kids smitten with black music, do most of the songs sound completely white? (Primly white, too; there is no slut cool, Shangri-Las style, none of the falsetto mania of Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels.) Some of the songs are supposed to sound white, like the naughty-but-nice "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now." But once the white and black kids meet, the sound of race music is a must. It is nowhere to be found, except in an uptempo number for Seaweed, "Run and Tell That," and a gospel ballad, "I Know Where I've Been," which struck me as a dull song, though Ms. Davis sang it with quiet concentration. Smokey Robinson? Leiber and Stoller? Prince? Maybe we needed a consortium of rock and soul veterans to make this show really move."

I believe that if Prince joined a show like that, he'd win a Tony. It has been suggested that "The Rainbow Children" unfolds like the score for a big Broadway musical. I think he'd win either as a composer or an actor-performer. A score by Prince would kick "Rent"'s ass.

In case you doubt his appeal to the theater/dance/classical music crowd, remember it wasn't very long ago that Prince's music served as the backdrop for the Joffrey's rock ballet:

"In 1993 Arpino produced America's first full-evening rock ballet, Billboards, to the music of Prince. Billboards, which combined the work of four different choreographers, broke box office records around the world with unprecedented lines of people waiting to buy tickets for the ballet."

So what about an Emmy? I think he could nab the category "Outstanding Main Title Theme Music." As a starting point, the instrumental song "Xenophobia" would sound great as an intro to a new urban drama series. Any other ideas?

I think Maurice White,Quincy Jones could as well.Babyface as well. Will Smith might expand into other areas with all His Success.I'd like to See Prince&Michael Jackson go into that direction.I think those two plus the Artists I Mentioned Before could pull it off as could Stevie Wonder, among others.

I Agree but America Loves Will Smith or so it seems.Successful in Music, as a Duo&a Solo Artist,His Own Logo Label Overbrook Records,TV "Fresh Prince of Bell Air" had a Good Run,His Film Career has been Very Successful though I haven't truly dug a Film all the way through by Him since Six Degrees of Seperation, the Guy is Big time at the Box Office especially around the 4th of July.He bores me overall but the guy has good a chance as anyone at winning every award in the Entertainment Business. He has alot of Music Awards&has a Oscar Nomination to Boot&I think He will continue to get nominations.I know who else I think has a chance at winning or gettign Nominated in all Categorys? Vannessa Williams. Her Music Career,Film Career,Tv,&Broadway She has done it all&Survived a Major Scandal especially during the Goody,Goody Reagan Era.I'd probably Root for Her more than anyone else just because She flip the script.also She is a Babe.Rick FOxx is a Lucky SOB.not only playing with the Lakers but also being down with Vanessa.that Glassy-Eyed Rascal Scored Big time.

So here's a trivia question: Has anyone else, other than Rita Moreno, won all four major awards before?

Tom

Rita Moreno also organizes/promotes parades to raise money for AIDs. A friend of mine in Cali took part in one this year and she emailed him with details about it.

Being Rita Moreno would take more than winning awards, it would also involve being more active in the community instead of being holed up at paisley park and refusing autographs and pictures and we are the world songs. He would have to put his personal agenda and celebrity status on hold for a moment and stand amongst the rest of us, like other famous people do from time to time.

Oh no.

I don't think the world is ready for another Prince acting performance. Not now, if ever.

If he were to be involved in the music alone, cool. But Prince needs to stay away from trying to write or direct any more musicals. Broadway or off Broadway.

Musical score? cool
Soundtrack? cool

Acting? no no no!
Directing? no no no!
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Such cynicism!
Yo', Mark, daily life in Vacaville must be getting to you.
As for "subyduby," your affection for Michael Jackson says it all.

Cynical? Moi? No, I'm just being a realist. There is no way no how the current version of Prince will lend his name to a Broadway show or TV series without complete and total control. It's just not going to happen.

Besides, Rita Moreno got her awards for acting, not music. That right there kills the Prince / Moreno comparison. A better comparison would be with Andrew Lloyd Webber.
