what reaction do younger fans get from peers?

- in regards to listening to or liking Prince? How do you explain your interest? Just curious.

I was taunted in school, and I explained that whoever they are a fan of probably is a Prince fan, so get off my back aready. Then I graduated, and work brought me to Washington DC for 3 years (where I saw Musicology by the way) and My neighbors were like "oh HELL YEEAH" So I didn't have to explain it once I was an adult, they were already hip. At least 10 years older than me, but so?

They usually laugh or say something negative regarding it.

However, I was at a party on NYE and someone saw my tattoo and said "AWESOME PRINCE TATTOO!"

I've convinced some of my friends to like Prince... the songs Black Sweat and Pussy Control are big hits among my age group

alot of my younger friends don't how to react when the subject of Prince comes up, the whole concept of a "real musician" for real music who lives 24/7 for his music is very foreign concept 2 them. So I guess a few younger people get into his music but the majority of their friends don't know what to make of it because it sounds so unique. My kids are relatively young age and all I know is that my 7 year old want to put on the Prince Ulitimate all the time and her friends want to put on Hillary Duff and the Disney High School Musical. So I guess my answer to your question is one of confusion.

"damn sure he is, and so am i, so better watch out or both prince n me will fuck you in the ass and make you gay too"

I think Prince should really show off his guitar, bass, and drum playing at the superbowl to reinstill that he is "talented". It's the most visual and simple way to impress.

SenseOfDoubt

Some of the reactions were like: what?! who listens to P anymore these days?

Some of them I could convince - I simply played them some selected highlights and explained Prince's career, his albums etc. AND let them know who wrote Nothing compares 2 U or Manic Monday... or what The Time was...

There's a 20 something lady I work with and she notice my Prince stuff at my desk and she was like "...oh I love Prince..." I always have to have a tempered repsone. I just said, "let me know when you have some time to check out the best stuff..."

The guy I've been working with for 7 years just rolled his eyes LOL.

My nephew has been checking out some Prince stuff and asked me 'what is the song "7" all about?' We had a good conversation about it. It was really cool
cool
My daughter now knows the difference between Prince (our dog) and the guy on the radio and TV. Her statement "..he looks like a girl.." my response "yes he does and that's ok..' eek

it seems like Prince's femme characteristics and prissy mannerisms are what gets in the way of younger people opening their minds and appreciating his music and performance skills.

Prince's *style* is what most people have problems with. Musicianship aside.

Funny how times change but still stay the same.

Been a Prince fan since the early 80's and have had to *defend* my appreciation of his music and still have to *defend* it to this day.

Only difference is that I just care a lot less what anyone else thinks in my old age. I tend to take the stance of "you don't like him? cool, your loss".

Back in the day, I would try to convert the world.

But in prince's defense I told how instead of emeinem doing one of the worlds most viewed primetime events Prince was doing it.PLus I said stuff like well you don't see ludacris or akon in the in the uk hall of fame or anything like that.Plus I don't see how could they like yo yo i going to kill you.Rappers have no musical talent, they can't play a horn or a piano.Just like Prince said we should be teaching our kids to love rather than kill or people of my age . But yet 80 % of my teachers like him.

Um...

I don't really talk to many people besides my two best friends at school, so they are able to understand that I like Prince...

But, if one of my friends tell someone that I like Prince, it's kind of an awkward situation for me because I don't know what to say.

If there's more people my age than I think there are that like Prince, then I think they're just afraid to admit it.

There are two girls in my office in their 20s same age group as me, I let out a 'WOOHOOO YEAH BABY' when I saw the 3121 club opening add on the net.

They came over to see what all the fuss was about, when they saw P on the screen they were all like whofarted and I was all like excited

That was bad enough but when I told them I thought he was sexy as hell, they fell off their chairs laughing, one girl said he looked like a worm!!!? sad WTF a worm??

Ah well, there was a silver lining though, turns out a guy from sales was a closet P fan he confided in the canteen, so now I have someone to share giggle

I think its stupid that one would feel the need to be a "closet fan". Is there something to be embarrased about?

The most common reactions I get when I tell my friends I listen to Prince are:

a) confused Isn't he gay?

b) eek Oh no. No, no, no, no, no!

c) confused .....who's he?

Hi everyone... I am new to this site, but love it! i have been a P fan since i was 3 or so.(dancin around everyday to my sisters lovesexy album) I am now 21 and still he is the best musician in the world to me! anyway, i have several friends my age who love prince now... ( i guess i have been a big influence;) but before any of them liked him... it was all the same non sense "hes an old gay man, how can you think he is hot!" but i tell ya, once you see that man play that guitar and sing those sweet words- you are hooked. its like he puts a spell on you, no matter what age! and that is exsactly how i have convinced my friends to become"prince fans" (of course not as loyal as us) by taking them to see him live!

Just this last new years weekend, my good friend from utah came out to Vegas(i live here-whoohoo prince lives like ten minutes from me!!) and i took her to see him at 3121. she loved it so much we went all three nights!

so for us youngin's we just need to convert all of our friends to the p side!
