you people better think a bit before you say something as stupid as prince is no guitar hero.
prince plays guitar better then 90 % of players on guitar players lists.

jeez eek well! All I really meant is that guitar heroes are usually limited to guitar, and Prince is known for many many things--even things that have nothing to do with music.

But I will say that guitar heroes generally brought something new to their instruments. Even Clapton (not one of my favorites by any means) was an innovator.

What innovation did Prince bring specifically to the guitar?

hahaha
then who is a guitar hero? clapton? santana?
or maybe that poor late curt cobain.
because all 3 are always on guitar lists of best players ,but the fact is prince can wipe the floor with santana and eric and 90% of the guitar players from those lists.
prince's guitar solos are very well composed licks.
jimmy jam or terry lewis said:prince play notes on guitar other people dont hear.i agree.he is one of the rare players who can solo endlessly but you gonna still crave for more.
he was,is the guitar hero from the day one.

kstrat you want versality in princes playing?
ok,examples
jazz solos on my summertime thang demo, creamy instrumental,
xogenus all contain diffrent phrasing style ,licks opposed to prince's jimi hendrix influanced solos on bambi, habibi, but at the same time prince beside hendrix rock influanced playing have santana influanced rock guitar playing.

fusion jazz influanced guitar solo in dorian mode prince did on miles davies"so what on bet awards is stylisticly much diffrent then his rock playing.

when you talked about prince have ability to put his style of playing in diffrent music genres, you were probably having clapton in mind.

clapton always plays 4 phrases he knows in every genre he plays.

if you want to know how good prince can play blues check first avenue blues from 1984 .he kicked ass there/but prince is no blues player.blues is great but its very limited by its structure and we all know prince dont like limitations.

Well I guess you've said it all! (LOL) I'm still sticking to my statement. I'm not comming into this discussion the least bit uninformed. I was a fan for many years, I'm just not moved by his more recent output.

Again, Prince is a great player within the context of his own music.
Prince's personality or voice on guitar is apparent and that's what I've always heard as opposed to any sort of "style". I certainly wasn't thinking of Eric Clapton when I posted my comment.

The problem with these type of threads is the great need for some of the org'ers to attempt to validate Prince's skills (in their own mind) by parring him against other musicians. It's kiddish & silly at best, in a Superman is stronger/better than The Hulk sorta way.

I don't get into the whole Guitar Olympics mentality. I don't use polls, list or surveys as a basis for forming my personal opinions. My set of ears obviously aren't hearing the same things you've heard and that's fine.

If you think that Prince is better than 90% of bunch of players on some list...well goodie for you. That's your valid opinion. Why not just leave at that?

confused - It's amazing the things people will post to try and justify Prince's talents on guitar. I think we all agree that Prince is great - there's no reason to go overboard with these super mystical "Prince's soul plays notes other people can't decipher" ramblings.

Notice that these types of statements generally come from non-guitar players/musicians. Housequake.com is even worse.

when i see steve vai i know he is amazing .prince can never compete with him in the term of speed, overall tehniq.
no way steve is much better almoust unhuman.

prince have good tehniq, but not so amazing tehniq as joe satriani, steve vai, yngwie.
but there is one important asppect of guitar playing.-imagination-.

in terms of imagination on a good day prince
can revisit simular sound sonic textures of guitar a place exclusivly reserved for jimi hendrix.

prince can also be mediocrite (rave 2000 dvd) but when he wants to kick ass he kicks ass.
how many time you heard prince's solo and you thought :damn where he got that idea.

For me Satriani and Vai leave me cold very often with their playing. Of course there are exceptions certainly, such as 'Rubina' by Satriani and 'Tender Surrender' by Vai, that one is just GORGEOUS!
Ive never heard Yngwie's playing so I wont comment on it(kind of makes sense then doesnt it?).

Neither of these two cats come close to Matt Bellamy of Muse. His guitar playing can make a grown man cry.
