This is a really hard topic... first off I think that due to tremendous airplay and Prince's self-created "mythos" I would have to include songs that are somewhat obscure, and otherwise NOT overtly Princely.

Of course the sample songlist would also have to be funky, and somewhat formulaic (so that are hypothetical listener could "get with it," 'cause we all know that Prince is into some really deep and cryptic s*it -- sorry).

With the above criteria in place I really couldn't choose any songs from Dirty Mind - Sign 'O' The Times eras, as this music is much to well known as belonging to Prince, and hence opening our friend up to possible biases.

1. What's My Name
This interogative makes a nice start to the compilation... gets them to wondering, "What in the heck is goin' on with this CD?" which is a good question. It will also expose them to Crystal Ball -- one of the most jam packed albums that you could want to own, and one that actually samples Prince's music over a huge time span.

2. The Plan
In keeping with my approach I would have to sock 'em with another obscure, but nice tune -- this instrumental really rocks in my opinion, and shows another side of Prince seldom appreciated.

3. Nine (Madhouse)
Although we as Prince fans are very familiar with his work in Madhouse, there are many people that think the latest turn to jazz is something new for Prince, when in fact he's been jazzin' the joint up for over twenty years -- if you consider this work from the mid-eighties. If I could buy any Prince work today this body of work would be a frontrunner!

4. Now
We gotta bring in some of that Gold Experience, and Now is a good choice for me, got that driving beat and is a song one doesn't have to think too much about, just groove to.

5. The Exodus Has Begun
I would want to introduce our listener to some of the NPG work, and although "Gold Nigga" is my favorite of the three NPG albums, it is a bit to "in your face." Some of the segues on Exodus are just plain funny -- reminding me of his work with Morris Day and The Time.

6. The Work Pt. 1
My toddlers will start funkin' right now if I put this joint on -- 'nuff said. James Brown in the house!

7. One Nite Alone
Let's slow it down and listen to the piano. And since we can't play "Why Don't You Call Me Anymore," why don't we play some One Nite Alone.

8. Hot Wit U (Nasty Girl Remix)
Rave is bashed way too much I think. Can you imagine if WB had this album to promote? They would've put it off the charts! This remix of "Hot Wit U" also samples one of my all time favorite Prince tunes "Nasty Girls."

9. Radical Man: 2045
Funky, and very socially conscious... minimum airplay, if they don't know now they'll be wonderin' who is this radical man?

10. Rosario 1999
I'd answer the question posed by the first tune with this little song from 1999 The New Master.

I don't know how these songs play together, but I think as a sampler it would really give a person a chance to hear some gems.

Some honorable mentions gotta be "Beautiful Night" "She's Always In My Hair" "Shake!" oh shut up, already... damn!
