It's about an interpersonal relationship that Prince has with another person, and in so much as he wrote several songs about it, and then just cares about the making of the money from the songs from the relationships kenitics. News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so. You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

The song is about The Greatest Romance (he even says that part by itself at the end) - a relationship that is above all others.
The lyrics "That's Ever Been Sold" refer simply to the story of the relationship being put in song form for sale. The overall title (which doesn't match the lyrics) is a nod to the biblical movie "The Greatest Story Ever Told".

I thought it was about a romance that was fake, and 'sold' to the public etc. Ah well, you learn something new everyday!

JaneyPoos used to be it... then they changed what it was. Now what I am isn't it and what is it is strange and frightening to me...

This is what I've always thought. I try to stay out of his personal biz, but I always thought it was about 'selling' the 'idea' of a r-ship to the public. I like the song, but that 'idea' leaves me, well...confused. Slightly bothered. I LOVE the remix w/ Eve. "Naked, w/out me, clever..you got the 'something', I got the lever..." Yummy... I always figured the key to this song was somewhere in this:
"Oh, I know U can feel me,know that U can dance But what do you know about the greatest romance? Not what U think, but what U believe What was the real reason that Adam never left Eve? And if the truth sounds like a memory Then U know it was meant to be (meant 2 be), meant 2 be" and yes, as someone said earlier, a nod to the "Greatest Story thats Ever been Told"- a bible story. So maybe the question is: why did Adam never leave Eve? Other lyrics from this song would suggest that because male/female are meant to be together regardless of free will (Ur heart has never been broken Until U’ve heard these words: "Your body was designed 2 respond 2 mine In spite of your desire 2 mold me") So maybe the song was just him posing that ? to his woman- wanting to find out what she knows/believes about love and the bible. i apparently have too much time on my hands... Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"

No! This is great stuff! That question haunts me every time I hear the song. What WAS the real reason Adam never left Eve. When I meet Prince, I'm gonna ask him that. Or I may faint. I'll probably faint. Hope he knows first aid. R "Plaid shorts are completely over."
