Why does Prince put the guitars to the back of the mix? I obviously noticed it years ago but JIR off GB is a travesty.
The guitar playing is immense; the timing, the structure and feeling yet it's at the back of the mix. Does prince prefer listening to drums or synths rather thsan guitars? Does he under-rate himself?

Yeah, I think he just prefers the sound of synths. Plus I think it's just tough to mix his songs where you can hear all the different parts... there's so much going on...

Wouldn't you love to hear all those great guitar parts upfront and clear? I sure would.

they're not clear? I thought they were, and hard panning right and left at the end... till that last echo delay of the last note centers itself... My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I find them to be right up front. The vocal play is a bit to the back, but the guitars are surrounding me. "Whatever skin we're in

I find it very frustrating in songs like 'Fury' and the solo in 'Cinammon Girl'. I just can't understand why the guitar is so low in the mix when the guitar is often the most important non-vocal element when he plays live.

I think the problem is that most of his music is so dense, with such busy arrangements, that alot of the stuff can sometimes just get lost in the mix...he knows how good a guitarist he is, he just doesn't feel the need to have to ram it down everyone's throat. [Edited 12/16/06 14:13pm]

the reason is because he is always trying to bring up the odd parts of the mix and tone down the typically loud parts of a mix on many of his studio tracks, think about Play in The Sunshine, The Cross, and many many other studio tracks and how they have the "prince brand" unique mix.
Joy in Repitition has also gone through the Prince style mixing... as well as most all of his studio tracks. The only studio album with typical mixes of instruments is Rainbow Children. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid
