his licks are more crazy,but still very melodic,while jesse's licks are more down to earth ,more fleshy .thats at least what i hear.

but Prince definitely has a wider range of guitar-savvy prowess
his guitar improvisations transcend far above those of most earth-dwelling musicians

I gotta say, this question has been asked on here, in the form of a thread, at LEAST 7 times since I've been on here. My response here will be the same as on the other threads; Prince is a more versatile guitarist. Jesse is no joke. The first time I had ever seen Prince live, in concert, was on his Controversy tour in early 82. The Time and Zapp opened up the show. Even though it's Prince playing the leads on Get It Up and The Stick, Jesse took those solos to another level in concert. Same as on the What Time Is It? album. Prince played the blistering solo on 777-9311, which by the way, was inspired and motivated to out do Jesse. Prince picked that sound and his use of the whammy bar on that solo was strictly because of Jesse's use of the bar and Jesse favored that sound live when he was with The Time. Again, Jesse took the solo to greater heights live. With all that said, Prince is still a better OVERALL guitarist. Jesse is an excellent player live. But Prince composes better leads. Prince understands give and take, push and pull in his lead playing, He understands the drama and excitement in guitar solos. What I'm saying is Prince is a showman. And he writes his leads that way. He constructs his solos to get the biggest effect. Jesse just pretty much go at it and plays much more by feel. Like a Stevie Ray. Which is hella cool. That style of playing works better in a live setting. Prince goes for the throat and the heart and the mind. His solos are always thought out, with this in mind. He understand dynamics better than Jesse because he's a better showman than Jesse. I tell ya this though; Prince admired the hell out of Jesse as a guitarist. He had a lot of respect for Jesse's skill. Although they were both influenced by Jimi and Eddie Hazel, they couldn't be more different as guitarists. Their styles are as different as day and night.

That being said, I love 'em both. Like BG said, two different styles, sorta like a Santana (Prince) and a Hendrix or Eddie Hazel (Jesse).

Madonna certainly puts on a better concert than Prince. I mean, did you see those dancers, the choreograpyhy, the lights, my God! did you see how many shoes the woman had on throughout the night!

I think a good concert is measured by how many pairs of shoes the performer wears throughout the evening. Don't you?

I recently got a copy of one of Jesse's solo albums, and to be honest, I was a bit dissapointed. Sure he's a good guitar player, but I wouldn't rate him in the top 100 or anything.

Prince on the other hand may not be the most technically able player (though he is VERY good), but he is a lot more immaginative with his playing. Jesse just sounds like a very good session player.

Completely off topic but Miko playing his solo in the beginning of "Do Me Baby" on the Nude Tour in Tokyo was incredible! So intense yet subtle and relaxed.

in the late 80's i thought Jesse was putting out better stuff than Prince but now looking back Prince's stuff has stood up better than Jesse's i remember an album review of one jesse's albums in the late 80's that said "Jesse Johnson is making the music Prince would have had he not gone insane"

It was only a matter of time before this topic would get raised again here.

My opinion is that Jesse & Prince's playing are stylistically different as corn flakes & collard greens.(LOL). I like them both. I have to say I prefer Jesse's overall vibe more. It's a blunter more "Foot in your ass" Blues-Rock playing style.

I finally got a chance to hear some of his live stuff from the mid 90's a few years ago and it confirmed what I already knew. Jesse flat-out smokes!

I find Prince's rock soloing to be a bit "ornate" (especially the more recent stuff I've heard) at times and that really isn't a bad thing. I just like a ballsier type of playing.

Btw, When Jesse joined Princes camp he was already an acomplished guitarist.
I'm sure he learned his share of stuff while working for Prince, however I believe the basis of his playing stylistically speaking was already formed.

Dag, sounds like i've slept on Jesse for real. i knew the time's stuff was mad funky, didn't know who composed or played what, but i'll have to see if i can find some of jesse's solo stuff and listen with a critical ear. it's a shame if he was THAT good that his visibility is gone and that he may never truly be appreciated
