94 East "One Man Jam" CD ?!

Okay, I thought I owned all Prince CDs.

I walked into HMV record store in London today and found something new in the Prince section (I always head there first).

Couldn't believe my eyes. A photo of a very young Prince playing his guitar on the front.

"PRINCE with 94 EAST - ONE MAN JAM"

Anyone heard of it?

I picked it up - pretty good early stuff.

Contains a VERY early version of "If You See Me" without Prince on vocals.

The inlay sleeve has some interesting notes about this early Prince band as well. It is a 2 CD set - you can hear Prince talking on some of the tracks and providing backing vocals too.

From the Orgs FAQs:

4.10 What is 94 East / Symbolic Beginning / One Man Jam?

Prior to Prince securing a record contract, Prince's early musical adventures resulted in him meeting a musician, Pepe Willie, who had moved to Minneapolis from New York and married Prince's cousin. Pepe Willie offered Prince opportunities to perform on a number of studio recordings with his group, 94 East, dating back to 1975.

In 1986, Pepe Willie released some of these recordings, originally under the title, 94 East: Minneapolis Genius - The Historic 1977 Recordings. Pepe Willie has subsequently released essentially the same recordings, sometimes remixed, on more than one occasion through different record labels and under different titles (Symbolic Beginnings, One Man Jam).

Basically, Prince's involvement was pretty minimal and was just Pepe Willie trying to cash in.

I'm loving this CD actually - it's great.

Several tracks sound VERY Prince-esque.

But it's just basically very funky and cool little CD.

I had this . but since I only like 3 songs I ripped it and took it to our local used cd shop to trade it . The guy at the desk looked at it for along time with his mouth hanging open . I was thinking maybe its hard to find . I bet he kept it for himself.
