Focus on the Family's review of 3121

PRO-SOCIAL CONTENT:
"Beautiful, Loved and Blessed" thanks God for truth, forgiveness, "the breath of life ... and the blood on Calvary." "The Word" and "Get on the Boat" tell people to get right with God before it's too late. Despite contemplating a "bump, bump, bump" with a young temptress on "Lolita," Prince doesn't give in ("You'll never make a cheater out of me ... If I took a sip, I'd be on the run"), however ...

OBJECTIONABLE CONTENT:
The singer wants it both ways, proud to have turned down sin, but only after painting a vivid picture of it. Elsewhere, the CD is full of provocative sexuality. Several tracks find people eager to strip ("Black Sweat," "3121," and the randy come-on "Incense and Candles"). The title song beckons listeners to attend a hedonistic party-to-end-all-parties, while "The Dance" describes a woman's willingness to make love "on the stairs, against the pole." A man brags about his ability to leave a female "Satisfied." Champagne flows on two songs, while another includes a mild profanity.

SUMMARY ADVISORY:
If fans have been baffled about what to call him (Prince, the artist formerly known as Prince, symbol guy), it's nothing compared to the confusion in his lyrics. One minute he's waxing religious, talking about salvation and a coming tribulation. The next he's leering, panting and trumpeting his sexual prowess. 3121 just doesn't add up.

The people at Focus on the Family need to get laid.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

they got a review of musicology on there too:

pro-social content:
Prince recalls the good ol’ days (“Reflection”) and rebukes an immodestly dressed woman who wants to have an affair (“What Do U Want Me 2 Do?” says, “I got a woman, you got a man/So we got to do what’s right”). On “Call My Name” he tells his wife, “I can’t stop writing songs about you/I love you so much” and believes the world would be a better place if everyone had a love like theirs. He warns a pal tempted to leave his lady that he will be waiting to heal her broken heart (“The Marrying Kind”), however ...

objectionable chit:
Prince is quick to point out flaws in the girl that he aims to fix (“I’m gonna put her on the same diet Missy went on/You know she eats too much”). “Mr. Man” is a diatribe against the government that’s heavy on complaining, light on solutions and personal responsibility. A gigolo services an ugly but wealthy woman on “Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance,” which involves sex, greed and gambling. Alcohol appears on “If Eye Was the Man in Ur Life,” and a turned-on man pleads for his lover to not leave him frustrated (“On the Couch”).

summarized:
The artist formerly known as “that symbol guy” returns to the pop charts with surprising Top-10 staying power. While this disc is better than past efforts (a devout Jehovah’s Witness, Prince shows moral restraint), Musicology isn’t a discipline worthy of teens’ study time.

I never heard of them, but they sound like those christian religious zealots.
From my personnal experience, they are the worse kind of people that ever set foot on this planet

They have a right to their opinion like anyone else.

And let's face it -- they ain't talkin' to us.

This is how his early work was interpretted...ALRIGHT!!! thumbs up!
Sexual vs Spiritual
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

That is P's whole career. I can understand why focus on the family does not get it. I can't understand why some of P's fans don't get it.

come on it was a fair review for a specific audience. why do you have an issue with them providing info on a product? are you all so paranoid? do you all attack screenit.com? or the mpaa ratings board?

that is so stupid... when the PMRC started their attackers called it an attack on free speech that it was up to the parents to regulate what the kids listened to... so they came up with labels... but then they cried over that. same with the V chip... some said "there's too much sex and violence on TV, it is hurting children" the producers said "that is up to the parents" so they made the V chip so parents could regulate what their kids could watch,,,and still the produces were not happy. same for game makers....

it seems every time someone offers a tool that both keeps free speech and gives people a tool to make decisions it is seen as an attack on speech!

i don't have an issue with them expressing their view, and no one on this thread said they can't or shouldn't. as someone who is not part of their specific audience, i find it humorous.

That is exactly what I was thinking when I first read that. If you don't understand all of that, they you will NEVER understand Prince's music, whether you're a fan or not.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

welli guess that does make sense. it's a good point. i mean, i wouldn't find Christian music appropriate for me if i was music shopping a particular artist. i heard that Johnny lang's new album was "inspirational". that makes me want to preview it first before i buy it.

As further proof of how screwed up the whole Focus on the Family clan can be, here's advice from James Dobson, the group's founder, on how to ensure that your son grows up to be a strappin' heterosexual.

"The boy's father has to do his part. He needs to mirror and affirm his son's maleness. He can play rough-and-tumble games with his son, in ways that are decidedly different from the games he would play with a little girl. He can help his son learn to throw and catch a ball. He can teach him to pound a square wooden peg into a square hole in a pegboard. He can even take his son with him into the shower, where the boy cannot help but notice that Dad has a penis, just like his, only bigger."

Hmm. He may be on to something here. I mean, if I had James Dobson for a father, and I were forced to shower with him and look at his penis, it certainly would have ruined my appetite for cock.
