I still don't understand what's up with this hype on the "High" album. I like most of the songs from it, but that's it: I simply like them. I'd never consider the "High" project such an amazing piece of music as many people in here seems to do. My guess is that all this hype comes from the fact that this is an unreleased album. Come think about it. If "Rave" wasn't never released people would be freakin out with this and that song. Same with "Newpower Soul" or any other album for that matter. Even the songs from "The Gold Experience" sounded much more exciting before the album was released.
I don't really think Prince ever took this seriously the "High" project. And if he did, I'm glad he didn't put it out.

Which is more than I can say of his most recent releases. If "Rave" wasn't never released people would be freakin out with this and that song.
Perhaps, but what makes High "special" is that it's actually a solid album, which Rave is not. I don't really think Prince ever took this seriously the "High" project. And if he did, I'm glad he didn't put it out.
Yeah, thank God for TRC.

High was a decent album, but it was hardly earth-shattering. It is definitely an improvement over Rave, but it doesn't really break any new ground. All in all, it would have been another decent, but forgettable, album. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

That's actually my point: the songs are not that GREAT and there's not cohesive point on all those cuts all together. I'm not saying that "Rave" was a masterpiece, but at least it was a little more neat as an album. What's your point when you say "High" is actually a solid LP ?

I think HIGH is definitely a more solid album than RAVE, I'll even go so far 2 say that I think some of the cuts would've charted decently 4 the man. I think it was a return 2 form vocally. No new musical ides but, good songs nevertheless. TRC a better album, yes, but HIGH is more accessible.
HIGH kinda sounds like a revised NPS a little bit, doesn't it? My Medallion = Mad Sex for example. -------------------------------------------------

It would have charted. Decently ... well... that's another matter.

And now please somebody explain to me what makes HIGH a solid album. I don't think it is so, but that's simply my opinion. Perhaps you can make me change my mind.

Talking about solid, how can you even be sure what was even going to end up on the album?

Golden Parachute is the bomb IMO, da liad back flute/guitar r&b lo-flow funk only Prince can effortlessly produce. I remember him commnting on the topic during the Gold era. SuperCute is a great joint as well. My other monster funk faves are The Daisy Chain and My Medallion, 2 of tha best hard-funk joints has put out in a good while.
I really didn't care 4 the song High, so I never really listen 2 it. I do love most of the songs on Rave : Undisputed remix,Tangerine ext vers,SFSP,Man O War,Beautful Strange demo & released vers, Silly Game,Whereever U Go, Strange But True and PrettyMan. I just cannot understand why so many fans put this cd downs so much, maybe becuz Prince hyped it s much and went back 2 a major label 2 release it. But Rave has it's highs and lows and I'm glad it was unleashed on the birthdte of my 1st child.Rave will always be a special album 4 more reasons than one.

This thread makes me wanna check it out again. I think it's an okay disk. Some fun songs. Nothing that really blew my mind or made me gain any new insight into Prince's talent. I think that maybe it's what NPS should've been. If he's gonna make a thowaway-type album, it should have some decent songs on it. I think all of the songs are good.

IMO it is "solid" because 11 of 13 songs R NOT garbage. None R incredible of course. 4 the most part, the album maintains a flow between the songs and keeps them w/in a genre rather than having it too all over the place. His vocal work is astounding and quite entertaing on most of the tracks. Most of the tracks R comparable 2 the rest of what IS popular among the brainless masses. All in all... nothing new or groundbreaking, but an album without a lot of filler. IMO -------------------------------------------------

I think "High" is basically "Rave" part two. They both seemed to be Prince going for the radio hit/mainstream song.
Most of the songs on "High" are somewhat dull. The lyrics to "High" are simply embarrassing: "Prince gonna get you high again..." Thank God that wasn't released to the general public. The only thing written would've been how far Prince had fallen and how low Prince sunk trying for commerical success. The beat is interesting in the beginning but loses its steam towards the end and quickly becomes boring. I never understood why everyone love "Supercute." I think it's okay, but not fantastic. "Underneath the Cream" has an okay chorus, but his spoken rap section is atrocious. "Golden Parachute" is more bland jazz and bitching about how bad the record companies are. Is he ever going to get that out of his system? Shut up about it already! Damn! Then there are the songs I actually think are good: "U Make My Sun Shine" is a beautiful ballad. Nicely constructed. Doesn't break any new ground but it doesn't have to. Great song, but a poor choice for a new single. Oh, another ballad by Prince? Yawn... "My Medallion" is funky, catchy and cool. Why wasn't this released as a video or single? Here he actually uses a stupid hip-hop beat to his benefit. And this song is funny, too. "Va-voom" I enjoy a lot. It's kind of a weak pop song, but something about it makes me smile. "When Eye Lay My Hands On U" is Prince's best song from this period. Its dark guitar work is truly inspired. This should've also been a single, but I think mainstream audiences wouldn't have accepted it. So I think "High" as an album was spotty. I'm definitely glad he decided not to release it and decided to concentrate more on "The Rainbow Children." I think it's a much better album than "High."

Agree with this whole heartedly. Very cheesy. "Underneath the Cream" has an okay chorus, but his spoken rap section is atrocious.
I could do with out the rap too. "Golden Parachute" is more bland jazz and bitching about how bad the record companies are. Is he ever going to get that out of his system? Shut up about it already! Damn!
Boring song. I don't have an issue with him ranting about the industry as long as the song is kick ass.
Don't see why these two are so well liked either. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

even be sure what was even going to end up on the album? Good point. There's been a number of tracklists floating around but I think that at the end of the day you'll just have to make your own album with your own song sequence. Here's what I put on my "high" album: 01. The Daisy Chain 02. Vavoom 03. U Make My Sun Shine 04. My Medallion 05. When Will We B Paid? 06. High 07. 2045: Radical Man 08. Supercute 09. Golden Parachute 10. Sex Me, Sex Me Not 11. Underneath The Cream 12. When Eye Lay My Hands On U 13. Gamillah I'm not sure if "2045 Radical Man" was ever intended for this project. But I simply put it on the 'album' since this is my favorit song from that period and I'd like to have it on a disc that I still play once in a while, instead of having it on the bamboozled soundtrack and only find it and play it once every 3 years I have to agree tho that the song "HIGH" itself is something that I can't listen to without hitting skip within seconds of the first chorus. Awful. The sound is ok, altho at the end it gets boring and strung out. But the lyrics are oh my god sooo awful. Makes TRC lyrics sound like Noel Gordon Byron at your garden party sprouting verse whilst riding your aunt Mabeline. I know, I know, time for bed. . Face it, nearly all of NPGMC year 1 was only worth B-side status in the past. The third disc of the hits wipes the floor with high.
Vavoom is fun, as is My Medallion. When I lay my hands on U is good, but the rest are middle of the road. I believe a lot of us (me included) are accepting sub standard material because its the only thing offered up. Songs like the Everlasting now are never "given away". We may get a 128 download, but why not a 320? Because he knows we'll buy the good stuff. .
