could be cuz the backing track is continuing layered screaming and wailing vocals like some haunted swamp at midnight. Punctuated with crying...

and it's about people being found dead...

Where do we find this song?

I, too am confused by the 1999 mention. A lot of it is filled with uptempo funk jams.

The album's actually very cold & harsh.

Even if the subject matter in most of the songs seem typical Prince (sex, temptation, lust, whatever) the heavy use of electronics/weird sound effects/moans etc. make them alot more dissonant/creepy than they would otherwise be.

omg r1ghteousone!

nod A long time ago, I thought the song was almost romantic, 'cause the only lyrics I could make out were "Either way you turn, I'll be there"
and "I'm climbing up the walls." I thought the song was about always being there for someone you care about, and going crazy thinking about them. lol Imagine my surprise when I find out the song's about a serial killer.

As for 1999, yeah, it has a cold/futuristic theme going on, but I wouldn't call it eerie per se.

Some of these choices are just strange. I mean...Lovesexy? Aside from Anna Stesia, I'm confused.

It's not at all about the tempo of a song. An uptempo song won't keep it from being dark, spooky, etc. Just ask The Cure. Even cuts like Lady Cab, Automatic and Let's pretend are very dark and eerie in subject matter.

I consider 1999 to be a little melancholic beneath its funk party surface, but I wouldn't call that eerie.

I think the most eerie thing Prince recorded was "others here with us" and "god" is a little eerie too. Album wise it's just a song here and there.

Huh? 3121 kicks the shit out of The Vault.

I admit defeat about 1999. Between the Vader voice at the beginning, the woman's cries for help at the end of DMSR, and the subtle apocalyptic theme, it's definitely just a little eerie. I hadn't heard it in a while, but it hit me while hearing it again.

"God" is super creepy. Prince was trying to scare folks with that cut.

1999.... To the first listener, it's definately strange, and definately mysterious. cool

Hell yeah it is. Look ya'll, Prince was putting as much distance as possible from other performers, especially black performers, in his subject matter of songs. NOBODY in 1982 was singing about what Prince was singing about. Prince wasn't singing about love songs at all. It is his most anti-love album. What it is about is dominence, being dominated, revenge, anger, bondage, not giving a fuck, being free, brutal sex, S&M, machinery and going to hell. Even the topic of the song "1999" is about doom. "D.M.S.R." is Prince saying "we're all going to hell living like we live, so fuck it. THIS is the shit I like to do and will continue to do." The album is Prince's best album EVER. His singing and musicianship is off the hook. He's never showcased his musicianship as much as he does on this album. This album is as much about that as the songs.
