This makes no sense to me... Prince is worth tens(if not hundreds) of millions ... His back catalogue should be bringing in plenty in royalties. I don't see how Prince has to worry about paying the bills... [Edited 12/13/06 13:53pm] I don't see his back catalog bringing in that much...considering as time goes by, the albums go out of print. But to explain it better, when P turns 70, it's going to cost a lot to retire and keep up the lifestyle he likes. It probably costs him a lot just to BE him. Probably several million each year. Not to mention all the people he needs to retain on payroll. I am sure he gets something for radio play. Not sure how much though. Plus he needs to keep his name current, hence Rio and Superbowl. He may be worth ten or hundreds of millions, but I am sure he doesn't see a lot of that money. Much of it is stocked into a back catalog that is collecting dust so-to-speak. I hope you don't mind me asking, but what is "artistic integrity" ? i do not mind... and i know it is kind of a weird phrase... but it is really something that either to get or do not get. anyway, prince had had 1000s of offers to use his songs in ads... he has refused most of them.... he has turned down money... he could have made much more... he (for the most part) chose not to sell his songs for adds.... that speaks to him not being a sell out. this garbage that "he got paid" for his music makes him a sell out... there is more to SELLING OUT that just selling something

Like i said, some see it as selling-out, but i don't think it's as clean-cut as that, in the past, i would say he only did this kind of thing because he had some motive. he is allowed to sell his music, i am not suggesting that merely selling a product is selling out, i'm saying that's how some see it.

Prince was the youngest artist to sign a contract giving him complete creative control: Writing, Producing, Performing, Arranging, etc... and held out on a contract until those things were guaranteed... the only thing he forgot (or wasn't thinking of at 19) was ownership. Prince made a lot of money back then - When Purple Rain sold over 18 Million copies in 84, when he renewed his contract with WB in the 90's for 100 Million, when he toured across America and Europe in the 80's and 90's... etc. etc., on and on... If you go to work and get paid for what you do, when is that selling out? If that's the case, I sell out every day... but, my mortgage is getting paid. you better understand what i'm trying to say before you go rolling those eyes in my direction, sweetiepie. in a certain manner of speaking, yes, i DO believe it was a certain kind of "selling out" the first time he signed a contract with WB, but by the same token, prince has never pretended to have any kind of anti-corporate credibility or anti-mainstream leanings. he is a talented artist and he has always maintained that his art has capital (not an unfair claim), and as such he's never made any bones about his art being his business. prince loves money. he always has. he's been very vocal about this all throughout his career. you can admire this, think it's an ugly trait, or just not give a damn, but it is what it is. if acknowledging that fact about the man means i should not be on this site, then you might as well ban me now. It's the term "selling out" that annoys me. Thrown about as much as it is here on this site, it becomes annoying and frustrating to continuously read in various posts. I wonder, how many people in his situation wouldn't demand the money he's due for the work he puts out... at one time in the 80's, almost an album a year! As far as my rolling my eyes in your direction... would you prefer this? (Really, no offense meant ) |

What I never understand and just can't see through is how fans claimed that the Batman album was a total sellout album yet when he plays vegas and opens a restaurant they defend him. Fucking illogical. And Batman as an album is fuckloads better than 312PISS.

For the record: I've always liked the Batman album, and never considered it a sell-out. How many artists are approached to write, perform and produce an entire soundtrack to a film? It was fucking cool... he deserves more credit for that one... plus he got to bang Kim Basinger! |

I love it too, but I remember everyone calling it his worst album of the 80s on the grounds of selling out pre-3121 & Musicology. Double standards, tbh - obviously I'm generalising; not everyone feels this way.

trickster said: european question: when is this superbowl? next year? is it official that he will play there? and last: what do you think he will play - one of those "never play them again Hits"?
thanks Go onto youtube.com - A great commercial and yes he will be playing. It's usually very early in the morning and you won't know when it'll be on as American football is very stop/start with loads of time outs. Each quarter is only 15 mis but can take 30 - 60 minutes to complete! I used to watch it years ago. I supported the Vikings but it's been a long time since I used to watch them. http://www.myspace.com/savage1999uk
