How amazed or impresses are you with Prince's early records?

I've been listening to "Dirty Mind" and P's second album by its namesake and even after all these years it never cease to amaze me how well produced songs like "Bambi" sound with the live drums, the way he rides the cymbal, the bass line, and guitar playing, or "Gotta Broken Heart Again", "When You Were Mine" "IWBYL", "WYWTMSB" and etc. I haven't bought P's first album, my collection is missing "For You", "Controversy", "Lovesexy" and "Batdance". I just wanna know from other P fans think about his music early in his career as far as the quality of his musicianship, songwriting, or singing.

Also, it is totally rare to see an artist whose musical recordings much like his tours get better and better with age.

I've always been impressed by Prince's work. And I love his early recordings. Some of the things he was talking about--woo! But seriously. They were well executed and mastered well. And I like them. P is like a tiny bottle of wine, he keeps getting better with age.

I still consider Prince to be a ridiculously underrated album. I think it's absolutely fantastic.

4 U quite its very deep for a first record. Prince is OK but not great. BUT Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999 leave me speechless, it was sustained brilliance.

For You is a very accomplished first album, but you can tell he did spend ages trying to perfect it. I much prefer Prince...the pressure wasn't on him to deliver a 'big' record and he seems generally more confident in what he's doing.

Most definately.

If we say 'early Prince' is what, pre-Purple Rain, then that's most of my favourite Prince records: For You & Controversy, I'm lookin' at you! love

For you, dirty mind and 1999 are recorded very poorly. They are sonically very bad but great songs and production.

I;'ve just been on a forum with bruce sweiden who recorded and mixed the MJ albums; MAN I WISHED HE RECORDED PRINCE. He is the best.

Compare off the wall to Prince
Thriller to 1999 SONICALLY MJ has amazing albums becuase of his engineer who was given total freedom to record and mix.

I love Prince way more; if 1999 was recorded and mastered properly it may have been my fav album ever. The production was suberb but elements are lost in the recording and mastering which is a shame.

Considering the fact that I was just a mere child when they came out...they freaking blew my very young impressionable mind!!

Now here I am in my mid-30's, happily married, about to celebrate my 5th year as a successful business owner, living in the suburbs, with two happy well adjusted children of my own...extremely thankful that they did!! cool
