I read a thing once where the writer suggested the song was about someone who'd died of AIDS. Civil war being a metaphor for the body's "fighting" within itself.[/quote]

That exactly what I thought of whenI heard the song the first time.

I am not buying the crap that he just pulled it out of his ass. There is just no way that it means nothing to him personally. Whatever it is, he won't say but it must have really affected him. Its one of his best,..if not his best...IMHO

If the wind blew all the petals from your precious red rose, would you be afraid of what you'd find inside?...

I always thought the civil war thing was a conflict between to separate people, not a conflict within

Hmmm....that IS an interesting take on that as well.
Or maybe one person with 2 personalities?

hmmm

That whole multiple personality/multiple gender thing isn't a foreign concept to Prince. Maybe you're on to something.

I know what you mean. I know the official word is that it's all fiction, but I really have a hard time believing it.

If it is just a song and just a movie, then isn't it odd that they evoke so much more emotion in the audience than songs we all know came from experience. i.e. Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife?

sidenote: Goddamn, Freud would've have a field day with Our Hero, wouldn't he?

in april of 1985 on Easter Sunday, Prince brought the Purple Rain Tour to Miami...he said something about that "he was looking for the April snow."

oh yeah,,, also remember when he retired in 85 and he sent Steve to make a statement... they asked something like

reporter: "what is he going to do?"

Steve: he's going to look for the ladder

reporter: what does that mean?

Steve: sometimes it snows in April

interesting...thank U. the ladder still brings me to looking for God inside...climbing the Chakras. don't know if Prince intended to imply this.

Christopher Tracy is Prince's psycholoigical conditioning for Jesus. The name itself is representitive of this CHRISTopher T in tracy being a representation of the cross. The long for civil war is a psychological battle within Prince himself about the true understanding of what it would be to be Jesus and Prince's misguided realizations of his salvation nature fuled by egotisim. Thusly Prince assumes such a battle goes on in other people as well as it did within him. He's wrong about that. Though, he's wrong about many things.

yawn

Right the wrong.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

Hello folks... have a rare MPLS factoid about CHRISTOPHER TRACY!

Christopher Tracy was originally to be played by "St." Paul Peterson before he left THE FAMILY. Prince wrote the role and film to help launch Peterson/The Family (which Jerome Benton [I love that dude!] was helping out with too), but decided to take the role over and keep the film in production when Peterson left.

Cheers... and stay tuned for an album review of PARADE here over the weekend:
