Prince may have not had anything directly to do with it, but TLC was obviosuly inspired (slightly ripping off) the song "SOTT" because it deals with the same social issues (HIV/AIDS & Gangs). On that same TLC album, they covered "IIWYG" so the P influence was alive and well for them back in the mid 90s.

I've always felt P had something to do with this song. The way it's sung is in P's style and even the spoken part "listen 2 me" is all him.
Even if he's not responsible for it, P surely must be the inspriration behind it. Just my opinion. " a newborn child knows nothing of destruction, nothing of love & hate"

I'm so glad to see others think the same thing I do. I actually thought that was a Prince song for the longest time. I'd be surprised if there wasn't a Prince influence in there somewhere.

Well, since I know I couple of people who played on it, I can say without question that Prince had nothing to do with it. Not the writing. You guys take "inspiration" too far sometimes. AIDS/HIV is a HUGE issue that many artists have written about. Its very real, especially in the black community and its no surprise that any artist would address it. Plastic surgery and abortion were also addressed but I see that was omitted because it doesn't fit in with the "Prince" inspiration. Regardless to what some have "felt", I know for a fact that he didn't ghostwrite it nor did he play on it. For the millionth time, Its not his. "If I was Your Girlfriend" - definately Prince-influenced.

I agree. I dont know if he had anything to do with it but it seems people reach a little too much looking for connections between Prince and anything that sounds like something he did or would do. Many artists are inspired by Prince from jazz artists to hard rockers and even art rockers. Its fair to say he's made an impression on just about every pop artist from the last 15+ yrs.

fyi Prince plyd a version of this live at one of his Paisley shows back in Autumn '95 with Dallas Austin on keys. It was Homer Simpson: "I call the big one Bitey"!!

They also mention that they were in a Prince-induced vibe during that album period, so I can see how Waterfalls came to be from inspiration by the song SOTT, and of course coupled with the fact that they included IIWYG on the same album.

Influenced by does not equal written by or copied. Prince is influenced by others when he writes as is every artist. Prince had nothing to do with the writing of the song. End of story.

Where did I say HE had something to do with writing it? All I said was that they were feeling P in that time period, as they stated in an interview, and Waterfalls is almost an exact knock-off of SOTT as far as the social commentary goes, along with the fact that they covered IIWYG.

Are you implying that the problems addressed in "Waterfalls" are exclusive to SOTT rather than issues that actually plague society? That's a bold ass call.

ok someone needs to take a chill pill...its a damn song and and whether it was prince influenced or not, doesnt matter.Just beacuse someone claims to know "people" doesnt make their story credible either. If TLC was feeling prince in that time period then fine but damn, yall takin this shit WAY too serious! ~*Laura*~

Regardless to what "someone" knows, THE FACT STILL REMAINS THAT PRINCE'S NAME IS NOWHERE ON THE CREDITS. He didn't write it. Deal with it. Let's move on.

No, I'm simply saying when you consider ALL the variables: 1 - They said they were on a Prince kick during that creative period 2 - They covered If I Was Your Girlfriend on that same album Waterfalls appears on 3 - In both SOTT and Waterfalls the songs discuss AIDS/HIV & Gangs - And if you even want to take it to a 4th reason - Prince once said he wanted to work with them because he was feeling them. Factor in ALL of those variables and it's pretty easy to surmise that Waterfalls was inspired directly by SOTT.

TLC didn't write the music. I know who did. Prince had nothing to do with the song. End of story. Give credit where its due and stop being a fanbot.

Relax, I think you're misunderstanding me. I never said Prince had anything DIRECTLY to do with the song, what I'm saying is TLC was INFLUENCED by P around that time and Waterfalls sounds like a direct creation from that influence.

Actually Prince did write this song, the reason it's not generally known is because it's quite an old track.
It actually dates from 1984, and was originally part of the 2LP version of Purple Rain that was pruned back to 1LP before release. Prince's vocals on the out-take version are a little, uhm, weak, because he recorded the song shortly after the time he had a couple of ribs removed.

Seems you are the one getting all excited over this topic. Just cause we hear and incredible likeness to his style shouldn't be grounds for you to go overboard. If he had nothing to do with it, fine. "I" always thought he did, but it doesn't matter one way or the other, just an observation is all it is. " a newborn child knows nothing of destruction, nothing of love & hate"

You know I always felt when Prince was writing SOTT he must have been listening to Marvin Gaye's Whats Going On. They both deal with social commentary expressed thru music & you can just feel a Marvin Gaye vibe thru-out SOTT.
Perhaps Marvin Gaye wrote Waterfalls with Prince.

BlaqueKnight.....what part of Waterfall deals with Plastic surgery and abortion ? A lonely mother gazing out of her window Staring at a son that she just can't touch If at any time he's in a jam She'll be by his side But he doesn't realize he hurts her so much But all the praying just ain't helping At all 'cause he can't seem to keep His self out of trouble So he goes out and he makes his money The best way he knows how Another body laying cold in the gutter Listen to me Don't go chasing waterfalls Please stick to the rivers and lakes that You're used to I know that you're gonna have it your way Or nothing at all But I think you're moving too fast Little precious has a natural obsession For temptation but he just can't see She gives him loving that his body can't handle But all he can say is baby it's good to me One day he goes and takes a glimpse In the mirror But he doesn't recognize his own face His health is fading and he doesn't know why 3 letters took him to his final resting place Y'all don't hear me I seen a rainbow yesterday But too many storms have come and gone Leavin' a trace of not one God - given ray Is it because my life is ten shades of gray I pray all ten fade away Seldom praise Him for the sunny days And like His promise is true Only my faith can undo The many chances I blew To bring my life to anew Clear blue and unconditional skies Have dried the tears from my eyes No more lonely cries My only bleedin' hope Is for the folk who can't cope Wit such an endurin' pain That it keeps 'em in the pourin' rain Who's to blame For tootin' caine in your own vein What a shame You shoot and aim for someone else's brain You claim the insane And name this day in time For fallin' prey to crime I say the system got you victim to your own mind Dreams are hopeless aspirations In hopes of comin' true Believe in yourself The rest is up to me and you
