Isn't It Funny... That now Prince is considered to be safe entertainment these days where as years ago he was considered the "freak" or the "nasty" man. I think it's great that he is now getting the respect that he deserves. What you think? Especially related to the recent announcements?

In the entertainment business, longevity = respect.
Look at Ozzy Osbourne, fifteen years ago they feared him and his bird-head biting ways, then they celebrate him with a reality t.v. show. KISS is another act who went from "Knights In Satan's Service", spitting up blood and freaking everyone out, to VH1 darlings. Time is the healer of all wounds. |

Yes it is and you've given some great examples of this fact-thanks

Yeah it is funny looking on it in retrospect. I think one of the reasons I was so attracted to Prince was because he was so sexual and X rated. In fact there were two artists that I could NOT get caught watching in my younger years because of their explicitness and that was Madonna and Prince!
But I have alot of respect for Prince and realise that he sees the absurdity of sacrificing musical talent for sexiness to promote music. He has the gift of music in his veins and doesn't have to go down that road again unless he feels it in his heart because he has what other newer artists don't have...the natural gift of speaking the music lanuguage.

it's too bad that so many learned the truth too late
so many years of regret lie backwards in the shadow of their shame but for those of us who knew and saw and IN=joyed everything to its fullest we smile

I think it's goddamned depressing. It's great that he's finally getting his much-deserved respect, but for Christ's sake -does established and respected have to equate safe? Calling entertainment "safe" is the farthest thing from a compliment IMO.
I'm not saying he should still be parading around in a speedo and thigh-highs, and I'm certainly not one of those fans that fantasizes about some weird Purple Rain static utopia. It's not like I can't see the good points in this present state either. But why can't a Prince album or show still be challenging and surprising and maybe even a little shocking? Personally I am kind of hoping he'll do something or other to shock people off their seats at the Super Bowl Show, but I'm not counting on it. I know there'll be a great performance regardless, but it's a sad state of affairs when Our Hero is classed on the level of McCartney family-friendliness. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

i don't think you can remain "edgy" into old age without sinking deeper and deeper into the fringe...and as you get older, i believe security becomes more important than outsider cred.
also, i think it just becomes less important to come off as 'rebellious' as you get older. people soften or else they become brittle, maybe.

Face it guys, nobody's 25 forever guys
I'm just happy Prince is still an active musician putting out great music He may not be 'shocking anymore, but in this age of titties flying free, vaginas being flashed, and profanities being abundant ...is anyone really that shocking anymore??? If you will, so will I

You make a valid point with that...theres more shock when you can get a "mental" picture from "suggestive" lyrics..you can make your own fantasies that way !! I don't work in the business (and glad for it!) but I'd imagine there'd be more pressure in trying to come up with a commercially appealing work than just making music for the hell of it. As for security, what more does he need? The man is a multi-millionaire and if he doesn't go on a crazy spending spree, always will be 'til the day he leaves us. It's not like he was scraping the bottom of his wallet before his current popular resurgence. But they say there's nothing like the roar of the crowd to motivate a performer, and I suspect that had more to do with his decision to play nice with the suits and do Musicology and 3121 than finances. You just can't get that same feel in a small club, I suppose. I don't think he needs to keep trying to be sexually shocking -there's damn little these days that'll surprise a crowd.(except a Jacksonly nipple) But I don't think it's necessary to soften up and be child-friendly either just because he's not so young anymore. Maybe if he had a kid of his own, he could indulge his need to parent that child and set boundaries and ease up on everybody else. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
