CONTROVERSY - the album... I am just absolutely LOVING this album at the moment. It must have been in my collection for just over a decade (!) but it's only now that I'm REALLY digging the music (!!) Anyone else think that this album just funks, rocks and souls amazingly well?? [This message was edited Sun Sep 8 9:29:34 PDT 2002 by Anji]

controversy is one of my 2 favorite prince albums(the other being SOTT)...it has a very short running time (37:18) but each song is a tightly crafted gem...stripped down but not boring or minimalistic...always gets rotation in my CD player

I really like Controversy too,
there's so many great tracks on it. Though I could live without 'Ronnie Talk 2 Russia' (should've just been a b-side IMO) & 'Do Me Baby' maybe should've been the final track.

Yeah, I had a delayed response to this album too, and now it's one of my favs. The title track is thumpin', I love the spoken part at the end. . ."People call me rude, I wish we all were nude, I wish there was no black and white, I wish there were no rules". Private Joy is such a wonderful campy little 80's gem. And Jack U Off is FUNNY. So is Ronni Talk to Russia. . ."go to the zoo but don't feed guerillas who're gonna blow up the world"
Fab. Love it. Doves, Mel!ssa

Whilst on the subject of the Controversy album, the outtakes from this period that never made the cut were:
The original version of 'Tick, Tick, Bang' 'Broken' 'Gotta Stop (Messin' About)' Does anybody else believe 'Controversy' would have been a stronger album had the above songs been part of it? 'She's Just A Baby' is the weakest track from this particular era and was, IMO, rightfully shelved. . "You don't frighten us, English pig dogs. Go and boil your bottoms, sons of a silly person."

I like this album better than ever too. Doesn't get the recognition it deserves. But rollingstone.com recently updated their review of it with a very generous 4 star rating. check it out-

I love it! I just got it a few days ago (I'm a new fan) and my favorite songs are (besides Controversy and Do Me Baby), Sexuality, Private Joy and Let's Work.

I love it and wouldn't remove one track because that cd gives a listener more of an inside look into Prince's abilities than you think.

That's the first song Prince used the Linn Drum Machine in. Just a little observation, one of my favorites as well off that album.

I had 1999 for an entire year before I got another Prince album, then I had Purple Rain for about six months, and finally bought Controvery in early 85. Loved it. It has so many different sides of Prince in it and is a ton of fun. Spiritual-sexual-political. I don't know why, but for the longest time "Let's Work" was the song I always skipped. I was raised on rock, so I guess I didn't understand the song at the time. It's one of my favs now, especially after seeing Prince open with this song during his live performance on Sinbad's old late-night talkshow.

Props to you for a very honest statement that no doubt applies to many others on this board. 'Let's Work' could be substituted for any number of different P tunes and apply. I don't know why so many others have difficulty making admissions like these.

Controversy is a wonderful Album Besides the title track, Do Me Baby, Private Joy , Annie Christian, Sexuality and Jack U Off. The piano solo Do Me Baby was breathtaking and Prince's Falsetto Glorious. Simply Wonderful. And the Sexy Poster of Prince wearing just black thongs with his hair wet in the shower with a Crucifix on the wall was well,Controversial, Hot , And Scandalous! THE Man Is Awesome!

I cannot say enough about this album. About 4 years ago, I thought that anything before "1999" was simply an afterthought. However, this album and "Dirty Mind" proved me wrong! I can go as far to say that I have probably listened to "Controversy" more than any other album by Prince in the past 4 years. It truly is consistent and wonderful! Every track is great.

Actually,"Gotta Stop Messin About" was recorded during the 'Dirty Mind' sessions in 1980,so in all likelihood,it is an outtake from 'Dirty Mind'. I LOVE "She's Just A Baby"! I've always felt that Prince should have shortened "Do Me,Baby" in order to make room for this song on the album.

"'Gotta Stop (Messin' About)" was released and was a "Dirty Mind" leftover, it was never intended for "Controversy"... "Broken" and "She's Just A Baby" were also never considered for "Controversy"... Controversy is the bomb diggity---this is the album that Prince put his shit together and took his studio wizardry to the next level from Dirty Mind. He learned to "freak" the slow song with Do Me baby.He learned to punk funk the jam with Controversy--that opening to Controversy--wa wab--is the shit. The whole song screams of a Prince manifesto, lyric and music-wise. The chicken scratch guitar alone makes it a classic...the odd synth--the lords prayer-the grunts of "ugghs" on the back beat..the whole damn thing is the ultimate Prince song. Vintage Prince shit. Sexuality shows his new wave influence, and intoduces his trademark aoohoo scream. Do Me Baby he realized what he could actually do in a dark studio..precursor to all slow jams being freaked and an album before International Lover. Private Joy with that Linn-drum machine is ultimate pop. Very underrated. I love th e voice he uses in it especially when he says "cant get enuff cant get enuff". Lets Work, rubbery bass and razor synth that goes together and jams. This is the MN. sound. Annie Christian-anti music, Prince weirdness that
made him Prince. And driving it back home, J U Off, his rockabilly rock pre Delirious Elvis imitation. Controversy is the essence of Prince music. This is one of those records that I want to fuck. This is not music, this is a trip. Every home should have one. "Climb in my fur."
