Especially when he is playing live you can witness that. Building further on that thing i think Prince will do best when he covers lets say: an old Robert Johnson song, an Otis ballad, a Jerry Lee Lewis piano-thumber or a stripped down James Brown-cut. I think Prince hears lots music and is subtly influenced by so many things, and I dont doubt he appreciates that old stuff still I see his main influences that gave him his initial foundations and musical identity were artists from the 1960's and 1970's and mostly James Brown, Hendrix and Sly but also many other artists of that time , but Prince is a Gemini so he seems to be able to be hip to music thats moving with times as much as he is hip to his original and major influences. I generally dont see Prince being much of a purist at all except at times when he is doing certain styles of Funk but for example when I have seen Prince do Blues stuff its not ususually done in purists way I mean look at song like "The question of you" . Ithinkj Prince is too restless to be a purist and I doubt he would make too many albums that follow in the traditional styles of those artists., and if he did covers of those artist mentioned I think they would be much more interpretive versions rather than a pure cover, to be honest I dont think I am overly impressed with many of the covers I have heard Prince do, one of my favourite's would be his cover of "Just My Imagination" to Me this is far better than his covers of "Everyday is a Winding Road", or What if God was one of us.

I'll stick to one, The Beatles' 'I want you (she's so heavy)'. Good heavens, he could tear that sh*t up! Do it in a crazy rock/funk/jazz way, with some screaming screams.

I have the *perfect* song---I was just listening to a mixed cd a friend made me the other day and it had:
I'm So Tired of Being Alone by Al Green and I was like, "damn, Prince needs to do this; the lyrics are great, plenty of room for Princey screams and maybe a lil' guitar jam." (And it has horns, too.) not sure about other songs...I'd have to think about it some more...

Closer - Nine Inch Nails Is it Crime? - Sade Ohhh, God, I'd pay GOOD MONEY to hear him sing "I want to fuck you like an animal" Damn, I miss the pre-Jehovan Prince. NEVER! Prince would mutilate that song to death. Ugh, he'd fucking trash it. No no no no! meow85 said: Man, wouldn't it be cool if he pulled a Bowie and worked with Trent? Maybe patch things up with the guy first, but then! It could be greatness.
It would be fucking awesome, but I doubt it'll ever happen, a) because they're so different now, and b) because they're both such "go-it-alone" artists that they'd almost certainly fall out. Plus Trent hasn't had the best luck with his other collaborations, in terms of what they make seeing the light of day (Tapeworm, anyone?)

maxwell's 'this woman's work' from the movie 'love and basketball'
[although max put so much purple in his chords 4 that song that i thought it was prince when i first saw the movie] i wouldn't mind p covering something by the late roger t he could use guitar instead of key board the family's 'til the river runs dry' would be sweet also if re done by p [still lovin the original]

hell yes!!! that was so incredible, I still talk about that to people all the time who didn't see it. One of the best guitar solos I have ever heard- and aside from Prince I'm a straight up rock fan. Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"
They've taken a lifetime lease on Paisley Park ...
