The Air That I Breathe by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazelwood,

If I could make a wish I think I'd pass
Can't think of anything I need
No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound
Nothing to eat no books to read
Making love with you, has left me peaceful warm inside
What more could I ask
There's nothing left to be desired

Sometimes all I need is the air that I breathe and to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe yes to love you
Just to have you now
All I need is the air that I breathe you're all I want

Peace came upon me and it breathes in me
Don't sleep silent angel don't you sleep

Sometimes all I need is the air that I breathe and to love you
just to have you now
All I need is the air that I breathe yes to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe you're all I want

Sometimes all I need is the air that I breathe and to love you

yeah but the hazelwood brothers wrote it... it has been done by a number of acts. my personal favorite being Hank Williams Jr. (on of the few acts i know of that used to put out even more material than prince ever did)

Never heard the Hank Williams version before, Juilio Iglesius (not sure how to spell that) version was terrible.

I'm kidding. But it might be nice to be tucked in by him, w/ some cookies & milk by the bedside (Oreos, please). Maybe have him sing me a li'l lullaby b4 turning off the lights, just as long as it's not Tambourine. 'Yeah, yeah, 2 bad'. (Nothing against the song, I love it, but my mind needs calm at night. Sweet gentle soothing things, and lots and lots of calm).

Peg-Steely Dan
the Test-the Chemical Bros.
Speaking in Tongues-Eagles of Death Metal

Super! Thanks for asking

I would like to change my vote from 'the Test' by the Chemical Bros. to 'Cars' by Gary Numan..anyone with me on this one?

"Cat People (Putting Out Fire)" - David Bowie (obviously the OST version)
"What's Goin' On" - Marvin Gaye
"Holding On To You" - Terence Trent D'Arby

On a side note it would be interesting to see P doin' some electric Miles Davis tunes (like a "On The Corner" jam or "Spanish Key" from BB, just to name two).

Despite the often modern sounds and crazy effects, i more and more have the idea that Prince 'in his heart' is a real old schooler: someone who longs back to the days and sounds of people like Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, Little Richard, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Sly Stone.
Especially when he is playing live you can witness that.

Building further on that thing i think Prince will do best when he covers lets say: an old Robert Johnson song, an Otis ballad, a Jerry Lee Lewis piano-thumber or a stripped down James Brown-cut.

That's a great point. In many ways Prince IS one big cover album; a conglomeration of Jimi, Miles, Joni, James, Sly, The Beatles, Little Richard, Marvin, Stevie...shit, even The Stones, Parliament, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Bowie, Marc Bolan, The Supremes, Tower of Power..right on down to Zappa, KISS, Alice Cooper, The Cure and Zeppelin if you look (and listen) hard enough. What he did was COMBINE all of that a completely new thing, which is what I always enjoyed about him and, now that he's approaching 50, is what's so interesting about the idea of the covers. He covered different things at different points - often within the same song - from the composition, to the theatrics, the dance moves, the posing, the outfits....the sounds and the production...

He covered so much from so many different people, he created his own musical and visual stew...and man is it delicious. In many ways, he's really not all that innovative, at least in terms of originality, but he's a master borrower, re-interpretor and alchemist of ALL the right ingredients and influences.

Prince is a master chemist, really. He knows how to combine a little borrowed from here and a little borrowed from there, in just the right proportions.

Shorty, have u ever heard the live version of Prince doing "Ain't No Sunshine"?If so, why did that not turn u on to Prince's known covers, If not, I bet it will. Trust me.
Anyway I would like Prince to cover "Song 4 U" by Donnie Hathaway. "Crazy" by both Seal and Gnarls Barkley (Prince has covered the later "Crazy" recently in Vegas. I would give anything to have heard it. Lastly, "Could it be I'm Falling in Love" by the Spinners.

Prince would definitely do this song justice, its one of my favs. Another song in this genre he could cover is "Hello its Me" by Todd Rundgren. This thread is great.

ADDICTED TO LOVE - ROBERT PALMER

Your lights are on, but you're not home
Your mind is not your own
Your heart sweats, your body shakes
Another kiss is what it takes

You can't sleep, you can't eat
There's no doubt, you're in deep
Your throat is tight, you can't breathe
Another kiss is all you need

Whoa, you like to think that you're immune to the stuff, oh yeah
It's closer to the truth to say you can't get enough
You know you're gonna have to face it, you're addicted to love

You see the signs, but you can't read
You're runnin' at a different speed
Your heart beats in double time
Another kiss and you'll be mine, a one track mind

continued below...

You can't be saved
Oblivion is all you crave
If there's some left for you
You don't mind if you do

Whoa, you like to think that you're immune to the stuff, oh yeah
It's closer to the truth to say you can't get enough
You know you're gonna have to face it, you're addicted to love

Might as well face it, you're addicted to love
Might as well face it, you're addicted to love
Might as well face it, you're addicted to love
Might as well face it, you're addicted to love
Might as well face it, you're addicted to love

----- lead guitar -----

Your lights are on, but you're not home
Your will is not your own
You're heart sweats and teeth grind
Another kiss and you'll be mine

Whoa, you like to think that you're immune to the stuff, oh yeah
It's closer to the truth to say you can't get enough
You know you're gonna have to face it, you're addicted to love

Might as well face it, you're addicted to love
Might as well face it, you're addicted to love
Might as well face it, you're addicted to love
Might as well face it, you're addicted to love
Might as well face it, you're addicted to love

Interesting that me and 3 others picked Bowie tracks

I thought of that as well, and avoided listing them because I was beaten to the punch. There are a lot of paralells with Prince and Bowie - androgynous sex symbols, pioneers, theatricality, movies, long-term success/legacy, make-up, existing somewhat outside the mainstream, always being smarter/one step ahead, wealth, chameleon-like public personas...

My Bowie cover list:

Moonage Daydream
Heros

I think Prince hears lots music and is subtly influenced by so many things, and I dont doubt he appreciates that old stuff still I see his main influences that gave him his initial foundations and musical identity were artists from the 1960's and 1970's and mostly James Brown, Hendrix and Sly but also many other artists of that
time , but Prince is a Gemini so he seems to be able to be hip to music thats moving with times as much as he is hip to his original and major influences. I generally dont see Prince being much of a purist at all except at times when he is doing certain styles of Funk but for example when I have seen Prince do Blues stuff its not ususually done in purists way I mean look at song like "The question of you" . Ithinkj Prince is too restless to be a purist and I doubt he would make too many albums that follow in the traditional styles of those artists.
