Since I've gotten no response in the Associated Artists thread, I figured you cats would dig this: http://www.youtube.com/wa...Gyq4oYjWMg

Jesse smoked in that clip no doubt, but the majority of those licks sounded like Prince licks. He had some original stuff in it and he does differ but I just had to close my eyes to realize that if I was JUST hearing that, I wouldn't be surprised if someone said it was Prince. Now I have not heard a lot of Jesse's solo stuff and that was the first live thing I've seen but I was impressed none the less. I think though that Jesse is limited to what he can play. At what he does he may be better than Prince, but I doubt that Jesse can play as many differant styles as Prince can.

shrug It doesn't sound like Prince to me... maybe the solo with the wah is kind of Princey... they both do pentatonic solos... and maybe the solo at the end is sort of like the end of Let's go crazy...

But the rhythm playing and the riffs don't sound like Prince to me at all... I would have never thought it was Prince while hearing that...

Agreed on the rhythm playing. I was talking about the solo in general. It is evident (to me at least) that they both were influenced by each other. While they both have their own style, if I were to not know who that track was by and just heard the solo and somone told me it was Prince; I wouldn't doubt it. I have only been playing guitar for about 5 years or so; so I am no expert but to my hear I hear a lot of similarities besides just the solo being strucured around the penatonic and the use of a wah-wah. But then again, what popular guitar player in history didn't use the penatonic and a wah-wah? biggrin But I do believe Prince is still a more versatile guitarist. I just haven't heard enough of Jesse's stuff to form a real educated opinion. JesseDezz if you got some other stuff of Jesse playing some differant styles I would love to see it.

Watch out P! Jesss Johnson's comin' back - time for a little competition methinks!

i recall running a thread about P needing a cocky , younger pig headed protege' to help raise his game. Well looks like waits over, game's on, P BRING THE NOISE!. Seriously though, Jesse really is a damn fine Guitarist and creates seriously great funk / rock riffs [listen to 'My Life'] [Thanks for the info on the Associated artists page].
taken from my original locked thread!!. [lol!] from what i've seen Jesse, axe for axe, can easily trade licks with the P, their style is very similar BUT P has written some of the greatest licks + has a 30 year Career!.

I'm just curious as to when Prince developed all these different playing styles. (LOL)
In all the years of listening to his playing, I've found his "style" is pretty singular. Very much to his credit is his ability to make his playing fit & sit well within his own tunes which do vary stylistically. It's not so much that his actually playing changes. Prince is a great player, I've just never thought of him as any sort of stylist.
