"Song of the Heart"---Possible Oscar Nominee?

I'm not saying I love the song or that it even deserves to be but aren't songs like this shoe-ins for Oscar nominations. As Happy Feet approaches $200 million and beyond, the feel good, gushy tune will have to get some sort of consideration. Wonder if WB will push it?

You're expecting much for a little song that doesn't have "Pimps", "B's", "Niggaz" "bullets 'or "Cadillacs" in it.

Yes, it should get nominated. Hopefully it wins.

Maybe it's just strange fate, but it seems like the weaker the Prince song that he releases, the better marketing behind it. It's always his great singles from the late 90's and beyond that get zero opportunities.

I still think it's a crying shame that "Dolphin" wasn't the huge hit it deserved to be.

You can thank the WB for that unbelievable screw-up. They had The Gold Experience in their lap for almost two years and didn't know what to do with it. Who was the genius behind all of that? The closest thing this world ever got to Purple Rain Part 2 and what? Nothing! Yeah, there's more to the story, but still, the WB should've at least seen the money-making opportunity behind marketing The Gold Experience and sponsoring a world-wide tour.

For sure. The Gold Experience was like a futuristic Purple Rain sequel, and it got shit all over. It STILL pisses me the fuck off.

The song is NOT even the movie. Would that make a difference?

It's on the soundtrack and the closing credits so I think it would meet qualifications.

Just seems like the perfect formula for an Oscar Nominee...somewhat mediocre fluffy song by a pop icon in an animated film. This could have been P's Lion King if he had wanted it to be.

Does anyone know if this song is getting any airplay on regular radio? ( not that it has anything to do with an oscar nomination)

This song is not essential 2 the movie. I don't see how it would get a nod.

I don't think it is but, like you said, that wouldn't have an effect on an Oscar nod. Many of the most recent nominees have not made a blip on radio.

It ties in with the theme (heart songs) and you have to think that WB is going to put something up from the soundtrack. Why not the song from the highest profile artist and the first single?

Y'know, it'd be really funny if Prince got another Oscar, especially in the year 2007. Once again he'd be sticking it to the industry by beating them at their own game. He did it with a #1 debut in 2006, and with a "top-selling" album and highest-selling tour in 2004. He's getting quite good at this stuff, and 20+ years after his so-called commercial climax. I'm wonderin' what other surprises he gots up his sleeve.

Dude, I thought I was the only one who's still pissed that The Gold Experience didn't get the exposure it should have gotten. The album was supposed to be huge and to see it flop the way it did was and still is disgusting.

I'll be happy if Song of the Heart is nominated for an Oscar but I won't hold my breath.

nod Every time I listen to it, it has "mega hit" written all over it. It's absurd. It should've and would've been his second biggest selling album of all time.

nod My God you are not lying. I feel a small amount of sadness when I play this CD because of this. I still enjoy it immensly but knowing what should have happened and then seeing what did happen is just disheartning. I feel like for me, I have relived this again with 3121. I should never love another Prince CD again because Prince will never do the right thing with those CD's.

penguin Can't see why not an Oscar Nomination. It would be a hoot if every one involved in the film penguin could get nominated for something. Looks like it took alot of penguin and people to make it come together. biggrin Catchy cute song too heart penguin

yes it does...

this is what may trip up the song qualifying:

3. The measure of the work’s qualification shall be its effectiveness, craftsmanship, creative substance and relevance to the dramatic whole.

http://www.oscars.org/79a...ule16.html

No longer does a song qualify just because its part of the ending credits...last year the song for Brokeback Mountain did not qualify despite many saying it was one of the best songs of the year...it also explains why Hustle & Flow won...the song was pivital to the movie's story (and some would say its successs).

One could say that Prince's song would qualify cause the whole theme of the music is "doing what your heart feels" but then others could discredit the song because the song doesnt really represent the music or the mood of the film (like a Bagdad Cafe or Aimee Man's Save Me)..

so...at this point its a toss-up. working against Prince is that the song isnt a hit, he has already won one and this isnt associated with a broadway play (ala Evita or Chicago which saw their song authors nominated {and in the case of Andrew Lloyd Webber winning}. In Prince's favor...the movie is huge and is currently the odds on favor to win Best Animated Film...

chances of prince winning the award {today}? slim

well,Prince didn't exactly do his part to make it a success lol He witheld the video for "I Hate U" and spent most of his time badmouthing the label that released the CD (Warners).Under those circumstances, there was no way that 'TGE' could have become the big hit it deserved to be.

I'm living in Ireland and on the biggest radio station here (fm104) 'Song of the Heart' has been chosen for the 'Strawberry pick of the week' (the strawberry alarmclock-morning show) They choose a song every week and play it daily. I know we are only a teeney country compared to the airplay you guys probably get in the US....but it all makes a difference i suppose! smile

I heard it for the first time this morning and loovveedd it biggrin
I was sooo happy penguin when I finally heard Prince's voice over the airwaves!!

dancing jig excited music
All of me I give 2 thee down at your feet
The reassurance in your rhythm speaks 2 me
