Of course, unless someone proves me wrong, was the year 1999 rather weak in sales for the single "1999" ? Or at least a weak one with regards to Prince and overall exposure. He made a few appearances like pre-taping the Rave un2 the Year 2000 concert and allowing MTV to show it, but I dont' think anyone but Prince fans paid any attention.

Quick, buy the 12" purple vinyl version from this site. Now 'only' $38, was $108!!!!!

If only we could reduce how shit this recording is by a similar margin, it'd be a better world.

It's pretty bad. Had it come out similar to the other "remasters" (by leaking), it might have had a bit of a better response. But he was determined to try to undermine his classic with a remix of it really. If he wanted to test the waters with "new versions" he should have chose a different time.

I dont get why people hate this? Its practically the same as the original, yes, the production is slightly different and the some of the vocals are different but whats to hate?

I don't mean to sound too stupid but I've never heard it, was does sound like? Serouisly if you could take some time to describe it. Thanks how bad can it be? Some one used the word "rots" that's pretty bad and graphic.

1999: The Poo Master would have been a better title.

This sounds cool but it's not seamless. Yes, their voices are cleaned up and the volume is adjusted, but when it's Prince's turn to sing it sounds different - like he's singing over another song (not really as bad as karaoke, but along those same lines). Rosie Gaines (of the NPG) sings during the choruses. I liked Rosie back in the early 90's, but her voice does not belong on 1999.

There's a new Latin-inspired ending, but not until Doug E. Fresh makes his appearance with a very weak rap (one of those Prince ego-boosters a la My Name Is Prince). A politically relevant rap would've been more welcome.

That's about it. For a completist, I would get it (just so you have it). I do think it will be hard to find in the future, but not because of high demand. A lot of them get thrown out - it really is worth next to nothing.

Not to post another comparison, but imagine if Michael Jackson re-recorded a Jackson 5 classic, but used the original vocals from his brothers, the music sounded different and his own new vocals had the girly voice he has now (instead of the mini-James Brown it was when he was young). Sorta like that.

Oh, and imagine also if he added 2-3 other artists (who were friends of his but not currently popular) and still credited it as a Jackson 5 recording.

Listen, I love almost everything P has ever done, but 1999 The New Master is a complete and utter crock of shit. It pains my ears to listen to it.
