French maid outfit , happy ending, and the emotional connection?

Do U Lie

Prince has written and recorded a whole lot of songs over his career. His musical accomplishments have outnumbered nearly the number of plastic surgery procedures of all the Jackson Children combined. And motherfucker—that’s no small feat!

But I was listening to 3121 the other day, and I realize what it is that I don’t like about his new work. It doesn’t emotionally speak to me. It feels…on autopilot. Don’t get me wrong, 3121 is a mighty fine album, far better than a lot of albums released in 2006 by other artists. But when compared to the Likes of Purple Rain or SOTT, it doesn’t quite hit you in the gut the same. For that matter, it doesn’t stroke your penis as well either. Songs like “The Word” or the ridiculous ending of “The Dance” simply don’t have the same emotional “umph” of The Beautiful Ones or When Doves Cry. You don’t feel as if he means it quite the same way as he used to.

Even the ones that rely on nuances and suttle emotions, were quite striking back during the day. Take for example, Do U Lie from PARADE. It has a silly French sound to it, and he sings it in a pouty tenor that goes in and out of falsetto while Wendy and Lisa seemingly egg him on. Whenever I listen to it, sometimes I get annoyed and think “Oh Lawd, does this Queen here himself yelping?”, but then the afore mentioned suttle emotional vibe starts to hook me. Sometimes, I even imagine him wearing a cute, perky little French maid outfit while while daddy's favorite girl walks around my house and dusts my Target Furniture with his little feather duster, while his big doe eyes bat flirtatiously at me, his plump and soft lips puckered up, his long and luscious tongue licking his supple lips, his soft, brown sweaty skin catching the sunlight in my room as he shakes his well sculpted hips and…..erm.. eek… uhm, where was I again?

Oh yeah, anyways, shrug I think that the things I like about the older recordings is not that they’re better written songs.. but that they come off more emotionally sincere.

That doesn’t mean the music is of a better quality though. shrug

Well, the narration James-Earl-Jones-Meats-Barry-White voice on the Rainbow Children might, if he wasn't constantly talking about some weird ass digital garden all the time. shrug

I also miss all of the strange sounds and synth noises that he used to use. I used to look forward to them.

*sigh*

To be fair, I only think that this has been the case for the last 2 CDs and they seem to have been created with the masses in mind so it's hard to judge when neither 3121 nor Musicology represent any kind of artistic growth for P.

The Rainbow Children, One Nite Alone (piano) and NEWS showed that Prince can still create genuine feeling in his songs. Like them or not, these albums come across as Prince creating music from the heart without worrying about who will like the end product. And that's the Prince I've always liked.

3121 and Scatology were Prince-by-numbers albums by his choice and I'll bet that within a couple of years we'll be getting at least one P album that will bring our faith back again.

You need to listen to it outside of the closet.
The surround sound works much better that way.

I hate to say it but I think its age not in the sense that he he cant play or sing as he did not at all, I just think he was in his prime and had a certain element of bustling unpredictable creativity in those times, he was on a roll
he was probably more emotionally driven and it came out in his music and not too mention he was horny and put that vibe into making sexy music.

So he's stopped singing about vaginas????

(On-topic - reflections sounded kinda sincere, but otherwise I'm with u - Get On the Boat v. 1999, puh-leez! Altho Black Sweat kinda hit me, but it still all sounds like he's quoting himself, or someone else...)

perhaps it also has to do with our state of mind at the time.
We should consider OUR age when thinking back, we were younger, more emotional, niave, open, inexperienced, all together different than we are today...as well as Prince.
just sayin'
"not a fan" falloff yeah...ok
