Throwaway or Work of art? Which Prince songs do you consider to be throwaway (sound like they were written and recorded within an afternoon)? And which songs do you think sound like they were crafted to perfection during a long period of time?
And regardless of how you think they were created, do you like them anyway? Personally, I would have to say that 'Thieves In The Temple' sounds like very little effort went into it's creation (particularly the lyrics - some of Prince's worst IMO). However, on the same album, 'The Question Of U' and 'Joy In Repetition' sound like they were really worked on and sculptured to perfection. (Yeah, I know that 'Joy In Repetition' was four years old at that point, anyway) Any other suggestions?

there's a lot of them, but they seem to vary wildly from person to person. "Young and Beautiful" comes to mind, 'Trust", "Wedding Feast", "We Gets Up", "Courtin' Tine", "arrogance"...Damn near anything he ever gave to one of his bimbo female proteges...
Then again, a lot of fans LOVE those songs.

It's hard to answer your question because, as a rule, Prince records his material very quickly so that the recordings DON'T become 'overworked'. I think the Diamonds and Pearls record is the only example of an overworked recording, simply because he had access to so many musician's and performances - the most ever on a Prince record.

Pretty much everything from 92 to present except The Truth and a few tracks off The Vault.
I take that back, Gold sounded like some time was put into it. [This message was edited Tue Aug 27 15:10:50 PDT 2002 by Tom]

Hans Buff told me once that Prince worked the song "Sleep Around" for two weeks off and on before mixing it. (Mixing was completed in a single day, btw.) He said that it was the longest he had ever seen Prince work on one song.

I think Thieves In The Temple is one of the better tracks on GB. Can't Stop...sounds like one of those throwaway tracks though.

I could be wrong, but I think Cant Stop was from Sign O The Times era, and finally rerecorded and released on Grafitti Bridge.

"It's A Wonderful Day", from the 'Dream Factory' sessions, was deemed to be a "throwaway", as far as Susan Rogers - the engineer during those sessions - was concerned.
