Dream Factory

I read an excellent piece in a recent issue of GQ in the UK which made much of how good Dream Factory would have been if it had ever been released. It also said that many of the tracks were released on other, subsequent albums.

Does anyone know of a "definitive" tracklisting and which tracks were actually released?

Thnx

DF & Crystal Ball came up in another thread. Wasn't there also a Crystal Ball triple lp planned? Or was it always Dream Factory?

Yep, Crystal Ball 3LP, snipped down to just 2 and renamed Sign O' Times:

> Crystal Ball

Side 1
Rebirth of the Flesh
Play In the Sunshine
Housequake
The Ballad of Dorothy Parker

Side 2
It
Starfish and Coffee
Slow Love
Hot Thing

Side 3
Crystal Ball
If I Was Your Girlfriend
Rock Hard In a Funky Place

Side 4
The Ball
Joy In Repetition
Strange Relationship
I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man

Side 5
Shockadelica
Good Love
Forever In My Life
Sign of the Times

Side 6
The Cross
Adore
It's Gonna' be a Beautiful Night

And we might as well top off the lot with the Camille tracklist since it's related to:

> Camille

1. Rebirth Of The Flesh
2. Housequake
3. Strange Relationship
4. Feel U Up
5. Shockadelica
6. Good Love
7. If I Was Your Girlfriend
8. Rockhard In A Funky Place

Jestyr is spot on.

Dream Factory was a record with the Revolution, which got shelved when the group was disbanded.

Prince then worked on Camille, and he decided to expand Camille into a triple LP set, for a short while still attributed to Camille, by incorporating some of the Dream Factory tracks.

Prince submitted Crystal Ball to Warners who insisted that it be parred down to 2 LPs, which Prince eventually did, and having removed the title track, Prince renamed the set 'Sign O' The Times'.

Here's my little chronological run through of the journey from Dream Factory
to Sign O' The Times that I posted some time ago...

April 1986 - the first known version of Dream Factory is assembled.
(this is just a rough cassette, and was never intended as a potentially releaseable sequence)

side 1:
01. Visions
02. Dream Factory
03. It's A Wonderful Day
04. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker
05. Big Tall Wall
06. And That Says What?
side 2:
07. Strange Relationship
08. Teacher Teacher
09. Starfish And Coffee
10. A Place In Heaven
11. Sexual Suicide

June 3rd. 1986 - the first true configuration of Dream Factory is completed.
It had now expanded into a double album, and was intended to be very much a 'band' project, with prominent contributions from Revolution members, especially Wendy & Lisa.

side 1:
01. Visions
02. Dream Factory
03. It's A Wonderful Day
04. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker
05. It
side 2:
06. Strange Relationship
07. Teacher Teacher
08. Starfish And Coffee
(segue: interlude)
09. In A Large Room With No Light
(segue: nevaeh ni ecalp a)
10. Sexual Suicide
side 3:
11. Crystal Ball
12. Power Fantastic
side 4:
13. Last Heart
14. Witness 4 The Prosecution
15. Movie Star
16. A Place In Heaven
17. All My Dreams

July 18th 1986 - final configuration of Dream Factory is assembled before the project is shelved.

side 1:
01. Visions
(segue: nevaeh ni ecalp a)
02. Dream Factory
03. Train
04. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker
05. It
side 2:
06. Strange Relationship
07. Starfish And Coffee
(segue: interlude)
08. Slow Love
09. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
side 3:
10. Sign O' The Times
11. A Place In Heaven
12. Crystal Ball
side 4:
13. The Cross
14. Last Heart
15. Witness 4 The Prosecution
16. Movie Star
17. All My Dreams

This final incarnation had already started to move away from the ‘Revolution’ tracks, and was starting to include more solo Prince compositions. The album is shelved while the band continue the European and Japanese legs of the Parade tour, by the end of which, The Revolution is disbanded. Prince has no intention of finishing off and releasing a “Prince and the Revolution” album, so Dream Factory is scrapped. After toying with ‘The Dawn’ project, along with working on tracks for other artists/projects like Jill Jones, Tony LeMans, Deborah Allen and Madhouse. He then creates ‘Camille’ and puts together an album of tracks with his voice speeded up.

November 5th 1986 – the Camille album is finished.

side 1:
01. Rebirth Of The Flesh
02. Housequake
03. Strange Relationship
04. Feel U Up
side 2:
05. Shockadelica
06. Good Love
07. If I Was Your Girlfriend
08. Rockhard In A Funky Place

Prince is so fired up by the Camille project that instead of releasing the album as it stands he decides to expand the project into a triple album called Crystal Ball, which he finishes by the end of the month.

November 30th 1986 – Crystal Ball is completed.

side 1:
01. Rebirth Of The Flesh
02. Play In The Sunshine
03. Housequake
04. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker
side 2:
05. It
06. Starfish And Coffee
07. Slow Love
08. Hot Thing
side 3:
09. Crystal Ball
10. If I Was Your Girlfriend
11. Rockhard In A Funky Place
side 4:
12. The Ball
13. Joy In Repetition
14. Strange Relationship
15. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
side 5:
16. Shockadelica
17. Good Love
18. Forever In My Life
19. Sign O’ The Times
side 6:
20. The Cross
21. Adore
22. It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night

The album was submitted to WB, but they were unwilling to release a triple album and asked for it to be cut down to a double. Prince reluctantly agreed and edited the album down to what was released as the Sign O’ The Times album.

Yes there were covers made, and no they're not circulating.

Dream Factory cover was a hand drawn montage made by Prince and all the band
members (sounds a bit like a cross between 1999 and Around The World In A Day).

Camille cover was going to be another hand drawn cover depicting Camille as a
stick man with 'X's for eyes.

Crystal Ball cover is unknown, but it's quite possible it was the same image
that was used for Sign O' The Times.
