Opposite of NATO ... What is Prince's message when he says "the opposite of NATO is monotheism" in Muse to the Pharoah? | |

People have speculated that Otan sounds similar to Aten, the Sun God of Atenism, likely the first monotheistic religion, which was the official religion of Akhenaten (husband of Nefertiti and father of Tutankhamen).
Prince being into all that jazz, I guess NATO is a symbol here for the New World Order ('supreme power invested in the people' as he says in 'Democrazy'), as opposed to 'OTAN/Aten', which is monotheism - power vested in God, the only God and source of power. "Supreme power invested in the people Is a bit extreme The highest rank of authority Only God is Supreme!" -- Democrazy, from Chaka's 'Come 2 My House' The fact that this line appears in 'Muse 2 The Pharoah' strengthens this idea. Just a piece of information on this topic: OTAN (L'Organisation du Traité de l'Atlantique Nord) is the french acronym for NATO. I have no clue as to the relevance regarding the lyrics except that maybe it is a play on words using the OTAN/ Aten suggestion from a previous post - with the letters of the french acronym being arranged in the opposite order of the english acronym and then sounding like Aten. | |

Yeah, that line bothered me ever since I heard it. Well, not really bothered me, just kind of puzzled me.
At the Dallas concert, "ONA" I think it was, he said "the opposite of NATO...is me!" I couldn't figure out the first lyric, so that one, I just had to give up on. "Plaid shorts are completely over." | |

Misty on the live version he says "monotheism" My understanding is summed up by NouveauDance, though I couldn't ever really reconcile the fact that Otan isn't Aten.
