Why did he distort the vocals?

It's a damn shame becuase the song is a near masterpiece(except for this).

If you play the song loud it is totally horrible in places and this must have been deliberate becuase the album is not mastered loudly at all.

Maybe he has a "Little Red Corvette - The New Master" in the vault that forthcoming.

Prince invented allot of producing things he doesnt get credit for. Songs in that era were all new.

You have to remember what music sounded like before Prince.

The song is amazing now and it was 20 times more amazing backin the early 1980's

Prince let his vocals distort by pushing them too loud to perhaps make the song seem overdriven on those few words? they started doing it with electric guitars in the 60's.

Or perhaps he loved the take so much that it was a mistake that he ended up keeping as part of the flavor of the song.

He's right, the vocals do distort at at least one obvious point before the first chorus. It's always been like that. Most people don't notice, and it works for this song.

Hey mikek1 have you ever though about contacting Prince's camp and inquiring about getting a job that allows you to master his music. Contact greycap23 or j7 and get that job. By the way my speakers are just a $1,000 and they tell me it's sounds great and if it distorts when turned way up it was meant to be or it's the past so get over it. by the way since you turn up the volume on so many songs and you hear poor mastering R U sure you don't have hearing loss. But seriously I bet your next post has to do with (insert song or album or cd or dvd), I bet if you turn it way up you'll hear slight distortion, I know it's not P's fault it's the people who master it but I suggest you get a job to take care of it.

Yeah Vina great idea. These people with superior listening capacities should earn millions with this astonishing skill. Now most Prince songs sounds fucked up to some people.

They do not sound fine to everbody else. Do some testing yourself; the distortion and clipping are FACT and can be measured.

I suggest you become a member of steve's hoffman's site and forum. There's lots of immensely smart people on there who know about music INCLUDING prince and will give you some knowledge.

Infact i will start a thread about this site. PLEASE check it out. Become a member(takes 1 minute) and start a thread discussing mastering, distortion and clipping; relate it to Prince and people with EXPERTISE will tell you what i have been saying.

I get great amusement out of these threads. I wake up and wait till mikek1 starts a thread about how the sound of P's music sucks and how he loves P's music but does not like the mastering process thats done to it once P hands over the music to the refinement process. The weird question one has to asks is why repeatedly bring it up. Mikek1 has said it himself that he knows which albums has been mastered well and which have been put together poorly. So why keep asking the same question in a hundred different ways? As far as a group of people with expertise on this subject they should get together and have a party of sorts and discuss these musings. I bet it'll be one hell of a party. As far as this org site is concerned I don't see a lot of happy contributions to this thread so why keep it up? Take your expertise and anal like passion and keep the volume real high and keep yourself busy. And seriously get a professional hearing test. But I know come tomorrow or the day after there will be some lame ass thread about the sound of the music not about the music itself.
