Christian or Pagan?

Prince celebrates recreational heterosexuality blatantly. His ongoing conversion to conservative Xtianity seems like a hypocritical posture, considering all his pagan excesses (Caligula-inspired "Gett Off";the Times' "Pandemonium" album & continued Graeco-roman references:"Go to Hades,boy!"-Moviestar)
Please someone help me think this thru ...

I don't think the two are seperate for Prince, although his music sometimes makes it seem that way. To me, Prince celebrates sexuality as a true gift from God - not something that's anti-christian. But like many of us, some confusion or ocassional guilt can creep into some of his songs because it's so ingrained in our culture.
I'm not saying this is the case ... it's just my take.
By the way, I've never felt like Prince celebrates "recreational" sexuality. Maybe I'm confused about the word "recreational." To me, he does sing directly about enjoying physical pleasure, but I'm often moved to a spiritual level as well when I hear him sing.

If you'd just let the past go and realise that his songs and beliefs are different NOW, you wouldn't need any help!

I think half the times, he's just trying to rhyme.

The other half? Prince reinvents himself musically and spiritually. shrug

Gett off may be inspired by Caligula, but it's just a sex romp. It's no more pagan than a swingers' party.

It's that ole famous hypocrisy that runs rampant in the Prince camp. They all do as the Romans do, but frequently run and hide in the catecombs just in case God comes around.

and how do you figure that? P doesnt sing those songs anymore. its more like the original poster is comparing two different people.

no hypocrisy. just a changed person, a before and after.

I think you're taking my post too seriously. Just being me ole cranky, sarcastic self, but to answer your question, I was referring to him back then, but to carry on, it is a hypocrisy that runs rampant in the entertainment field as a whole.

no mention of it being the entertainment field as a whole, only in the "prince camp." if that's not what you meant, you shouldn't have said that.

as far as prince goes, he is a changed man. all of us change, grow, evolve as humans. if you don't, you're stagnant. prince used to be like that, celebrating "recreational heterosexuality blatantly". his "conversion" to christianity would only be hypocritical if he still wrote and sang those risque songs. he doesn't perform those anymore, so it can not be considered hypocritical. this is what the original poster was referring to, and you replied in agreement.

like i said, people change.

if this was all just you being cranky, then pardon. wink i have days like that too.

I think in many ways Prince is a product of his age and environment as most of us are , in ways he is original but in many ways I dont think he is, he followed in his fathers footsteps became muscician was succesful and later in life returning to the cultural and religious roots he was born into, all the showbiz elements that feature in his performance style are part of what he has always done and maybe were influenced by some of the shock pop/rock era of the early 80's or maybe he was just doing what he felt at the time , neverthe less its all become part of the Prince stageshow and it would be hard for him to completly change that I think.
