"What's Going On is a social commentary thats deliberately vague as to address whatever social issues are going on at the time, thus making it timeless. One of Marvin's greatest pennings; possibly one of THE greatest songs, period. Prince was not first to address gangs or drugs in a song. I think he may have been first of his peers to address AIDS, though. | |

I never thought P wrote it or anything,but the music was inspired by him. The horns remind me of Parade and the melody is a little Prince-ish.And,as someone mentioned,the title and imagery of a waterfall are "Princely".He has long influenced a lot of the music out there.That will never change. I think they were "inspired by" the Paul McCartney song Waterfalls. The lyrics to that one begin, "Don't go jumping waterfalls, please keep to the lake." Not my favorite TLC song. I always felt like their social issue songs felt forced. | |
