Lindy Layton's version of 'Do Me Baby' is definitely a contender for worst cover of a Prince song.Ever.

i just don't understand this from a prince fan. he stayed close to the original. he only funked it up a bit, which often is a good thing. vocals are almost identical, if not for the fact that they are now sung by a different person. so, it can hardly be the music that's bothering you. you must have some kind of grudge against d'angelo. am i reaching?

D's take on SAIMH is tight.

I hated it the first time I heard it. Then I realized this was a pretty good update of the song. He didn't fuck up the music like Alicia Keys did on HCUDCM.

D´Angelo´s and Alicia Keys´ covers are cool, say what you want. But what is horrible is Yo La Tengo´s cover of Raspberry Beret.

It has to be Patty Smith's version of "When Doves Cry" sang live a few months back on Regis & Kelly. Ugh, while I'm for old rockers milking for as long as they can, some of them need to accept when they're just done.

Definately all of Martikas versions of the songs that Prince wrote for her!!! Prince performs them so much better and with more depth and gut-wrenching emotion!! Love...Thy Will B Done being a prime example!!
Also, did Prince ever record Manic Monday?? If so, eye bet even that is far more superior than The Bangles version!!
Also his version of Nothing Compares 2 U is far more emotional than Sinead O'Connors version was!!

You don't understand it like I don't understand people who dislike 17 Days - it's all relative.

Don't go straight for the "hate" factor either - I REALLY dig D'Angelo, love both his albums - played them out! I simply think his version sucks donkey balls.

I admit I haven't listened to it many times (and for some reason never threw the tape in the garbage) so perhaps I'll give it another listen. In the meantime... fart

There was a cover of "I Wanna Be Your Lover" released by the twin girls who used to be on the Australian soap "Neighbours". Now that was by far the worst cover I've ever heard!

Has anybody ever heard the Goo Goo Dolls take on "I Could Never Take..."? Is it awful?!?

It's pretty interesting. On their earlier albums they used to have a lounge singer from Buffalo named "The Incredible Lance Diamond" sing lead on a cover tune while the Goo Goo Dolls backed him up.

Like I said, their version is pretty interesting. The music is a bit "punked up" and fairly faithful to the original. However, The Incredible Lance Diamond's vocals aren't too hot. "Dig if U will the picture" of a lounge singer fronting a pop/punk band and you'll get the idea.

For those that are interested the song can be found on the album "Hold Me Up".

Worst cover? Simple: Kiss - Tom Jones...Now I'm a Welshman, but even the majestic Tom has done me wrong by ruining Kiss with his "Think I'm Gonna Dance Now" slow waltz routine and chest hair.

Best Cover? Between broadway project with jeb loy nichols Ballad of Dorothy Parker and Blue States Alphabet St ... with a mention for Darlin Nikki on the Austin Does Prince CD.

There was a really freaking weird CD that came out about 6-7 years ago. It was all instrumental and choir-sung versions of a bunch of Prince songs. I can barely remember it now, but even that wasn't as bad as Ginuwine's "WDC." And don't get me started on Mariah and Dru Hill. "The Beautiful Ones" is absolute sacred territory. I'll never forget hearing that wretched cover for the first time, shopping in a music store. I vomited all over the floor, stole all the Prince CDs so they wouldn't continue to be offended in such a sacreligous manner, and ran away.
