The term "cult" as you are using it, means "attracting a small group of devotees" such as a "cult movie". So calling Hendrix a "cult artist" is a misnomer because he, like your other examples, is hugely famous with LARGE followings. You are using the term "cult artist" incorrectly. That's all.

Well doesn't that depend on how you define "large following"? (large in the 60's may have been a couple hundred thousand fans, today perhaps 15 million fans is considered large. I don't think Bob Marley has 15 million fans today but who the f*** knows.

How about cultheropopstar?

That gets my vote.
I think he was a pop star in the 80's-90's. But all the mystery and later works push him into the cult hero status for sure. And there he will be remembered.

pop stars burn out - cult heros go on forever!!! biggrin

Cultural Icon makes more sense. All I mean is that your term "cult hero" leads to confusion in the question. Prince is TOO well know to be a "cult artist". Has been since Purple Rain.

Cult hero? popstar? genius?.....sexgod?!
Why put him in a box. At the end of the day he's an absolutely AMAZING artist, who was put on this earth to create music for us all to enjoy, and that is what he will be remembered for.
Even mates of mine who are not nessaserily (ignore my crap spelling!) fans of Prince still say they admire him greatly as a musician.
Actually he's covered such a wide range of musical styles that every person I know loves at least one of his songs.

He is a legend biggrin

Maybe he's a cultural icon because his music doesn't fall into any one genre but sucessfully manages to straddle many genres which in turn makes his influence unique. Prince is not cult though I agree.

But, how is Prince an icon of his generation and not Madonna? Madonna is an icon. even if you hate her music you cant disregard the fact she has influenced a generation. imo.

SoulAlive

I think he's a little bit of both. He's had tremendous pop success in the past, but many of his albums only appeal to the hardcore fans.

When all is said and done will Prince be remembered as a Cult Hero like Jimi Hendrix – Santana – Bob Dylan - Bob Marley or will he be remembered as a Pop Star like Elton John - Michael Jackson – Madonna?

Cult Heroes live on like icons/symbols of a generation whose significance surpasses their musical accomplishments. Pop Stars come and go. I think one of the reasons Prince can be so harsh/blunt towards his fan base is that he would rather be viewed and eventually remembered as a "cult hero/musician" than a pop star judged by his last hit record.
