Do U like his 90's material better or his 80's material???

80's. Of course the 90's weren't bad either.

80's. Simply because it is better!
I do like most of his 90's stuff too, but 80's is just so much more interesting, original, better songs, better produktion... etc. And its ALL good, where as 90's is definately not!

IMO, why argue? We have the 80's and the 90's stuff, so lets just enjoy of both.

i'm one of the few people on the org that loves his 90's output..most of the Prince fans i know personally became a fan after hearing his 90's output...especially younger fans like myself.

my brother bought the 'batman' album in 1989 for a few cents on a market one day. he bought it because he liked the movie, not knowing it was a prince album. i also listened to that album. i was 8 at the time. we both liked the album very much.
years later, let's say i was sixteen, i really began to listen to music. i had never been very fond of prince or his music. okay, i liked 'purple rain'. i liked 'kiss'. i liked 'cream', but i disliked '1999' and 'when doves cry', mostly because of the videos. when seeing a prince-video i used to change channels. on the radio i didn't even notice prince-songs.
in 1998 i heard 'the one' and was kind of blown away by prince's vocal capacities. i bought 'new power soul' shortly after that. liked it. it didn't blow me away, but it put prince's music in a totally new perspective for me. i found out the 'batman' album was a prince album. couldn't believe it at first, that it was him on the whole record. every song sounding more different than the other. that album has just blown me away. i love it. not saying it's his best. i just love it.
from that moment on i kind of got hooked to the music. first buying 'gold'. i remember liking the title track and for that reason buying the album. it's good, better than 'new power soul'. after that i went to explore prince's 80's work. that's when i really became aware of this man's talent. buying 'purple rain', 'sign o' the times', 'dirty mind' and the rest of his 80's and 70's work. 'grafitti bridge' was kind of a disappointment for me, just like 'new power soul' and 'gold' became disappointments too after experiencing his work from a decade earlier.
since then i kind of started collecting all the outtakes up to 1990. i've bought 'diamonds and pearls', also a nice album, but i don't think i will buy anything else from his 90's work anymore. i burned 'come', but that's it. i HAVE bought 'the rainbow children' (2001) and it's a satisfying album. gives hope for the future. but nothing compares to his 80's work. i've come to this conclusion after hearing almost everything from his 80's work, including the outtakes from that decade. truly beautiful work.

I can't imagine not finding Prince till the 90's, missing out on the Purple Rain period, the release of SOTT and the general aura around Prince through that period.
Also the massive tours and venues in the late 80's - early 90's are of a sort that we will never see again, although there is a lot to be said for his more intimate gigs, watching a whole stadium freak to Let's Go Crazy or 1999 are lifetime experiences.
I've been totally shocked since joining the Org the amount of 'new' fans that are around, I thought it was the old-faithful who bought the diminishing sales of recent albums.
However it's not when you found 'his' music thats important, it's the fact that you did and in some ways having 10 years or more of albums to catch up on is probably quite an enjoyable and exciting experience for these newer fans.

I got into him with Diamonds & Pearls and properly some years later.

The 80s has that raw magic and freshness while the 90s is technically good if not better on some levels and not to be slept on.

Of course 80s wins out overall for impact.

I got into Prince because of 7, and I'd say they're the same. The '80's had The Beautiful Ones, but it also had Condition of the Heart. The 90's had Pink Cashmere, but it also had Jughead. Half brilliance, half crap. It's a perspective thing.

I am a really recent fan (only since around May), although I had always enjoyed his music casually. I have to say that, not having listeneed to all of his stuff (but most), that I like the '80's and '90's equally pretty much. Although I do think that his music from the '80's was overall better, some of his songs from the '90's are my favorites. It really depends for me on which cd's I've bought recently.

I don't compare, that would be like asking myself (I'm 22) which half of my life I enjoyed the best. I don't split them up, a view his career as a whole. I can think back to listening to Prince in the 80's when I was a child, and now that I'm a young adult. I still relate to him, and he relates to me...

I guess look at the totality of the period. For instance, Prince has had some good ballads in the 90's. But in comparison to his 80's ballads...well let's just say the 90's comes up a little short.

'Do Me Baby', 'International Lover' and 'The Beautiful Ones' easily outclass the sum of his 90's ballad output.

I've never liked Do Me Baby (well, not a whole lot) or International Lover. I'll take The One anyday over those two together.

I'm split between 80s and 90s. I like both pretty equally.

80's Easily for me.energy,vibe,attitude,Hungry,driven,Fight,etc.. 90's is a little Hit&alot of Miss for me overall.I think He has gotten better as a Musician overall IMHO.let me think: as a Writer 80's Smears the 90's.Arranger now I'll say He was cooler with the thiner Arrangement Style back in the 80's but His 90's Arrangements are Hit&Miss.Production: easily the 80's.too much over-Produced Material in the 90's till now IMHO.Vocals Easily the 80's.the Falsetto doesn't Hit as tight as back in the day IMHO.never was that crazy about His Regular Voice.He still has Vamps in His Music that are tight when He Grooves.Band Leader: I gotta Say a tie.still strong.a tie with 80's&90's as a Showman for me as well.Instrumentalist: 80's Had more Edge but He is Playing better overall to me.for me though He just doesn't have that Knock you on your Ass Jam or Jams like He had back in the day for me.

70's, 80's, 90's + 00's depends on the mood. 80's will always be the classic and the 90's shrouded in WB dispute. Did Prince put out his best stuff in the 90's when he just wanted WB off his back? Lets see what the rest of this decade brings before re-opening discussion!!
