For me,
it happened one night during my last year in high school.

After a party that was hosted at my house, I was in the kitchen putting away some chip bowls. I thought that every one had left by now.
But when I entered the living room, there sitting on the couch was a girl whom I was incredibly hot, for but thought of as way out of my league.
She explained to me that her friend/ride had taken off with some guy & left her stranded. She asked if it was possible for me to take her home.
Since my mind was set on the idea that the chances of anything ever happening between me & this 'irresistible bitch' was so far outside the possibilty of happening, I sat down next to her & non-chalantly replied, "Sure. Where do you live?"
Before she could respond, the song "Purple Rain" began to play on the radio.
"Oh!"she said, "I love this song!"

Suddenly, without warning, I felt a deep purpleness emerge from the very recesses of my soul & awash every fiber of my being.
Before either one of us realized what was happenning, me & said irresistible bitch found ourselves locked in an engaging & substantially-involved mack session.

Needles to say,
I got to see what this 'forbidden fruit' of sexiness looked like underneath the purple rain.....yeah.

On that night,
that oh so fateful night,
I had lived to see the Dawn.

Because of Prince, a dream that I dared not even dreamed came true (...twice, even!).

Mann,
now that I think of it.....

fuck this 'Illustrator' bullshit....

I'm going to go change my screen-name to "FoeverAFan"....

I was in a lapdance club in Birmingham (UK) called "LEGS ELEVEN" around 1998, and I remember seeing a girl perform a mind-blowing poledance to DARLING NIKKI.

I remember hearing those lyrics, and that powerful chorus, and it just went so well with the girl's gyrations and sexy movements.

I just had to find out who the song was by - and that's how I discovered my Prince obsession !

I live in Birmingham, I know where Legs 11 is, it's Chinatown, I always drink at some good bars round there. Never been in Legs 11 though, do the girls there dance to darling nikki on the regular? if so, its time for a visit smile

or maybe i can convince my wife to do it smile

As for the topic of this thread, I've always liked the Prince songs that I was aware of growing up, but I didn't become a seriously hardcore fan up until around 2002=ish.

I got into P bit by bit, and these are some of the highlights of what he did to get me.

--Humping the hell outta that speaker in "Darling Nikki"
--The whole "Rave" concert in 1999
--The video "1999"
--The first time I saw him prancing around in those black "manties"!
--Wearing a TON of make-up on the Lovesexy Promos.

Mine is quite recent really, despite the fact that I went to see him live at Wembley Stadium & Arena back in the early 90's! But back then I wasn't even a fan, my ex was! I could kick myself now, thinking how I went there & wasn't even in to him, what a waste!!! My ex was massively into him & had all of his music & then suddenly this year, I sort of remembered 'Continental' & had this urge to listen to it, so I went looking to see what album it was on & got it on Ebay & have never looked back really! Now own the majority of his stuff & saving hard to drag my reluctant hubby to Vegas for a break to see him!

Back in 1984, when all the Purple Rain hype was in full force (along with Cult Jam and Lisa Lisa [inside 80s joke for those who remember]), I was a kid and saw some concert footage from either Purple Rain the film or the accompanying concert tour. I didn't know who he was but I was mesmerized by his unusual and beautiful look. I was hooked. I've never really been a fan of his music, with the exception of some songs, but I do think he is among the most beautiful and sexy people I've ever seen,in a purely unconventional manner I find immensely appealing, which is why I still follow him to this day.

i was a minor fan when 1999 was out; i had the 45s (those are like big black cds, kids).

but like a lot of people here, when i first heard when doves cry on the radio, it was like a light went on in my head. i had never heard anything remotely like it, and had no idea who it was.

Seeing him on "American Bandstand" looking gay as hell but making the furthest thing from the weak stereotypical nerdy classical type music that people liked to associate gay people with. That's another reason I wanted to slap the shit out of Prince for having that damn classical music on the "Parade" album years later.

In the early years, many people may have called Prince a "fag" but all they could do was keep their damn mouths shut when the "fag" was throwin' down harder and kickin' the asses of the hard jammin' "straight" artists during that time. He was also mean as hell and was someone you did not want to fuck with. In the early years, in my eyes, Prince was truly a role model and could NO wrong.
Andy is a four letter word.

When the older girls in a dance class allowed us little girls to learn their
dance routine to a new song called Dirty Mind in 1980...Later, when I
returned home, I noticed that album was a part of my cousin's collection. It was on after that...been hooked ever since.

She used to hide the album from me because she got so tired of me playing it over and over again. The guy on the cover in the leg warmers, heels, and bikini (drawers) used to make my little cousin and I giggle.

My brother was playing a Prince LP (that tells you how old I am), I was 13 and I figured out what Head and Soft and Wet really meant!!! wink I thought, what a nasty guy. I got in trouble for singing Head around the house. I have been hooked every since. I even cut school, lied to a Nun at my Catholic school to get an excused absence, lied to my parents, telling them that I was spending the night at a friends house, and then spent the night on the streets of Downtown San Jose, Ca to be the first in line to get Prince tickets on his Little Red Corvette Tour. Boy that was a lot of lying I did wink That was the first concert that I attended on EASTER SUNDAY no less!. Under my Senior yearbook picture my quote says:"May u live 2 c the dawn", then I wrote how much that I apprieciated and loved my parents!!!

As a matter of fact, I am! I love both Gene and Johnny as Willy Wonka. (Although, I've had some thoughts about Johnny Depp that I've NEVER had about Gene Wilder! lol )

the fact that I wasn't
allowed to play his music
(while my mother was home)

same with Slick Rick & Too $hort
those were my childhood role models

so when I got old enough
I bought as much Prince
as I could get my hands on
first purchase was Purple Rain soundtrack
which was on a white cassette
I believe I was in high school at that time
maybe junior high
I wore "Computer Blue"/"Darlin Nikki" out!!!

another moment that made me
fall MORE of a fan
was when I found out HE was
actually the one behind The Time's stuff

that was when I became a member of The ORG

Perhaps Prince was inspired by the old woman in the bath in 'The Shining' from 1980?
