There is a good reason 4 this.

but what? i dont understand it, how is playing his videos on the net for fans a bad thing? they play them on vh1 and such.

Uh-huh. And he gets paid when they play them.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Doesn't he pay them to play the videos?

see what i dont get is for a long time (i dont know about now) music videos were free to the video channels that wanted to show them thats why there were so many local video shows in the 80's and they are great for promotion and they do no harm being on youtube.. in fact video's being on youtube could only help an artist acquire new fans...why on earth wouldn't an artist want his videos on there?

Becuase Prince is a nut, that's why. Having vids on a free service like youtube can only help increase your reach and appeal, especially to that younger market he 's been so hungry for these past few years.

It is not the videos it is the bootlegg footage that is the problem and P is not the only artist having things pulled off. Universal just filed a suit against My Space.

Well, they're all silly buggers for doing it.

I can understand a struggling artist or band doing so, they need all the money they can get. Oddly enough, those are the ones most likely to take advantage of the benefits of a free video or illegal downloading service. It's the artists' who are raking in the big bucks and have no need to worry about their finances that are trying to shut down places where the public can have access to their work without paying. Odd behaviour, if you ask me.

But take a look at a search for Prince vids on Youtube -the music videos are going too. It's not just bootleg videos that have been disappearing.
