Great track, and surprisingly underrated. I just love the perverse way he gave
the title "Dance On" to a track that is impossible to dance to! I can't help feeling that the track would've fiited better of Sign O' The Times though, continuing the theme of the title track and The Cross.

Good song. One of the first ones I'd heard as a new fan after wearing out PR and Come. (yes, that was my second album. ) Never got tired of it.

I always thought it was very Sly-influenced. Quirky and funky at the same time. My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

Riverpoet31 said: Dance On is one of the most innovative songs Prince has ever produced, that doesnt necessarily mean its one of his greatest songs, but the idea of Sheila E being 'in fight' with a drummachine, the bleak lyrics, the use of vocals and sound-effects and the guitar-riffing (which even sounds like speed-metal near the end) are very inventive.
I think that Lovesexy is often misunderstood, not appreciated in the right way by both critics and fans at the time of its release. After the glory of Sign of the Times, mixing invention and tradition in a balanced way, people were probably expecting Prince to continue in this way. But Lovesexy sees Prince focus on invention mostly, experimenting with sounds and styles he had tried before, but taking it too another level, creating intricate, multi-layered, busy arrangements. I agree, some parts of the record are too busy for their own good, but for me Lovesexy in general is showing the growth of Prince as a musical arranger. If master-arrangers like Frank Zappa, George Clinton (splendid vocal arrangements) and George Martin (the producer of the Beatles) had ever tried to make an album together, it would sound something like Lovesexy. pplz think dat in general about prince. For most of the prince fans, we all know he is the kinda person that seems like he can't stand something 4 2 long. and what he does not understand iz that fans don't work like that. we have 2 get a song and listen to it and be come satisfied with it and then get tired of it then we r ready for a new one. Prince gives us one after another takes a break and keeps on going again. Once we get an album we chill to it at first, then we finally get to soak it in and Prince dishes out a new one and we start the cycle all over again. we just decide to come bac to it later. kinda works how some r just now discussing the classics. Strange RELATIONSHIP? I think..Yes! hav u had ur + sign 2 day.
wish u heaven GOD Purplerain7772001

Detroit, what's happenin?
At the time, I lived in Detroit and Detroit was Prince's favorite city to perform in, he'd say it all the time, we lovvvved him, partly thanks to Mojo.

'Dance On' is the only track I skip when listening to Lovesexy,
Lovesexy is a masterpiece, but 'Dance On' is the least track I like on this album. 'Dance On' doesn't have the positive spirituality 'message' like the rest of the songs imo and I don't like the weak melody. No, I like all the Lovesexy tracks except for this one, Tastes are different, right Prince 4Ever.

That's one of my favorite lines in the song--I love how he says it. (He love(d) Detroit--he gave y'all a shout out with the Detroit Crawl too!) I wasn't that crazy about Dance On initially, but now I dig it. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

This song really grabbed me by the gonads when I first heard it. It got me so exicted I did the "ants in the pants" dance when I was eating at Taco Bell. It's definitely my favorite song on the album, and one of my favorite of his of all time. It goes to show that Prince, once again, was the master of all these kinds of sounds, and was often years ahead of his time when he wanted to be. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!

YES, the tracked Lovesexy cd is legit, I got both a tracked and un-tracked, both are manufactured in Germany. The price in Denmark for a tracked version: 69 dkr. which is about $ 10-12. [Edited 11/24/06 6:58am] Prince 4Ever.

Quite the opposite, "band" makes no sense in the meaning of the song. Prince is playing on the words "ban" and "band" in the surface metaphor of the lyrics, but the meaning only makes sense with the word "Ban".

I was just listening to a lovesexy rehearsal with prince doing vocals on this. He shouldve left it in the set.
How hot would it be for a metal band to cover this song?
