Dance On - What do you all think? I'd like to hear your comments on track number five from the Lovesexy album (that I find great). I can not say that I care too much for the song; but it builds an interesting tension, don't you think?
After all I got the impression that this is the least beloved song from the Lovesexy album (when I remember a poll at housequake correctly).

There's only one track on Lovesexy. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

that is probably the best description I have ever heard of this song! This song gets nowhere near the love and respect it deserves man This is absolutely in my top 10 of Prince songs The song begins with a deathray and a scream, followed by a drumbeat from hell. The Robots of Funk in Frenetic and Frantic fashion warn of impending doom.....apacolype pushed back to 5 till midnight by the cheering chorus of "Dance On" and the happiest Organ you'll ever hear put down on wax. The robots continue dancing through impending death and destruction.....dancing and warning, dancing and warning, dancing and dancing and dancing and dancing on..... This song is genuis . i dont know why people hate on this track. it's one of those prince tunes that sounds completely original and unlike anything he did before it or has done since. i wish he'd still produce songs like that on a more consistent basis. i used play the drums on twin cities phonebooks to this jam. sheila was a mutha.

the indexed version... thanks for your positive responses everyone so far... keep it goin'!... this has to be the nicest forum on the web by the way, it's not that I do not like the song... let me clarify this. there seems to be no track from 78-88 era I dislike - hey, and I am in a massive P phase now! it's just not the type of song that i feel the urge of listening to that often [maybe the "I dont care too much" was too harsh, English is not my motherlanguage] Anyway, I read somewhere that this song was compared to "Tambourine", though I can't make out too many similarites, with the exception that both songs have this "tension" I mentioned in my opening post... And, after all, how the hell can anyone DISLIKE lovesexy. just my thought today when I went through the album... { Ah, two quick questions for the experts among you: Where "Future" and "Party man" both composed in 89 or earlier? Does anyone know about that? Did not want to create a new thread, please understand! }

Dance On is one of the most innovative songs Prince has ever produced, that doesnt necessarily mean its one of his greatest songs, but the idea of Sheila E being 'in fight' with a drummachine, the bleak lyrics, the use of vocals and sound-effects and the guitar-riffing (which even sounds like speed-metal near the end) are very inventive.
I think that Lovesexy is often misunderstood, not appreciated in the right way by both critics and fans at the time of its release. After the glory of Sign of the Times, mixing invention and tradition in a balanced way, people were probably expecting Prince to continue in this way. But Lovesexy sees Prince focus on invention mostly, experimenting with sounds and styles he had tried before, but taking it too another level, creating intricate, multi-layered, busy arrangements. I agree, some parts of the record are too busy for their own good, but for me Lovesexy in general is showing the growth of Prince as a musical arranger. If master-arrangers like Frank Zappa, George Clinton (splendid vocal arrangements) and George Martin (the producer of the Beatles) had ever tried to make an album together, it would sound something like Lovesexy.

Dance On and Lovesexy title track are the 2 best on the whole album, with Positivity a close third.
Dance On is definitely the one i go back to the most - a storming, funky classic. The drums absolutely rock. "Playing hard to get is getting hard to play".
