Ballad of Dorothy Parker Appreciation

I remember coming home one night in 1987 with my copy of SOTT and putting it on. Som of the songs blew me away first time - If I was your Girlfriend, It, and Adore. Dorothy Parker wasnt something that I skipped but it wasnt the first thing I went too either.

Now, nearly 20 years on I have really finally seen this song as the masterpiece it is! I love it, the feel, his voice and humour. I can't get enough of it and now I am so desparate for Warners to remaster the album for the 20th anniversary!

I felt this song when I first heard it; in fact, it was my fave song on the A side (yeah, I had the tape originally- sue me!). The thing I like most about the song is the end guitar riff, only I wish it were longer.

Love the song, love the album.

I was a bit disappointed at how much What Do U Want Me 2 Do sounds like it . . . he took one of his most unique-sounding songs and made it not so unique.

Arguably my favorite song in Prince's entire catalog. Everything is on point, lyrics, musicianship, vision...the damn song is perfect. I didn't get the song when I first heard it, but something made me keep coming back to it and now it's tied for my fav. all-time song along with If I Was Your Girlfriend. DP, is like Joni and Sly having a sonic child. The drum programming is unbelievable astonishing as well...damn! Any song with the line, "My pants were wet they came off, but she didn't see the movie cuz she hadn't read the book first" is pure genius!

Love this song.

Does "What Do U Want Me 2 Do?" drumline from Musicology sound like the DP line to anyone else but me?

I'm not making the connection, but maybe I'd need to listen to both back to back.

I loved Dorothy Parker the first time I heard it. It was one of those moments that just reaffirmed by admiration of his songcrafting talent. The best part for me is the little trill in his voice when he sings "Dorothy" right at the end. Happy shivers.
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

Good song. Love to hear him tweak it like

"Salt and pepper locks
Blue Black and fine - whoa
She got alotta tips"

"oh my favorite song she said
And it was Brenda singing
So good, so right
Then the phone rang and she said who...."

The closest Prince has ever been to Dylan's style of ethereal "dream" songs

i love when ppl ask me for my fave Prince song, which i hate answering and then i throw this at them, and they go kinda blank

thebest drum programming ever, giving way to the beloved "Sherm Stick" edit smile

Best song on his best Album.

I see in the Eric Leeds interview he rates it as well.
My sister played it for me, I'd sort of given Prince a miss after 1999 and she said "you got to hear this".

always be thankful for big sisters.

Amazing song.
I love how the lyrics just seem to flow even the melody changes....and the props to Joni are awesome.

Love it love it love it.

Don't see the similarity of this to What do you want me to do....but maybe I gotta listen to them both back to back before I make a final judgement.

biggrin Yup, definitely my favorite Prince Track!!!

The funny thing is that, according to Susan Rogers, the overall sound had to do with a problem with a newly installed mixing board. But P liked it, and decided to keep it that way.

I wish he would pursue more accidents like that - IMO, too much of his current stuff sounds a little too polished...

I think she was referring to the absence of low frequencies on the bass track. Not too uncommon for Prince tracks, but certainly in this clearness.

she made reference to the muted sound, a lack of high end; apparently the board malfunctioned because of a power-draining snowstorm, and she thought he'd be pissed when he heard what happened, but Prince liked what he heard and decided to keep it that way....

actually, there really isn't, there's just a hint -- and I'm thinking you're right, that was probably due to the same problem....but it all works, for some reason.... everything is there, it's just a little off--a great accident, really....
