Channel 4 - Hall of Fame I was over at my Mum's house when I remembered that tonight they were showing the UK HALL OF FAME AWARDS on terrestial television here in England on Channel 4.
So I raced home, and rushed to the television, switching it on like a crazy-man. I swear, it's fate. I switched it on exactly at the moment Prince was being discussed. Wendy and Lisa, Joni Mitchell, all paying respects to P. Then he came on stage and made a fantastic little speech. As usual when I see Prince at a UK awards show (like the Brits) I had a big stupid grin on my face. I thought he made a great speech actually, just the right length, and a nice little plug for club 3121 in Vegas.

Very cool and ol' Princey looked great. Pity there was no performance though. if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

Yeah it was a good show as well.
Well produced and presented. Respected musicians giving their opinions on the inductees. Prince himself said he "wished he had his band with him tonight". Shame he couldn't have blown people away like he did at The Brits! Hopefully, Prince will remember this and bring The NPG over to Britain sometime soon to give as another tv special (eg Jools Holland, BBC2). [Edited 11/16/06 15:19pm]

It was in the video montage introduction beforehand. They weren't singing, they were just making comments.

Well I was really impressed with that. His speech was excellent - very genuine and natural. He was clearly nervous and it was fantastic that he made a comment to that effect...
Proud to be a "fan" at times like this... and he didn't even play anything! Bit gutted about that - doesn't matter if your band isn't with you Princey - just grab a guitar and belt something out on your own for 10 minutes...!! I'm sure you'd still sound good. [Edited 11/16/06 15:40pm]

His speech was okay, he meandered a bit though. He talked about the type of music he grew up with on the radio 'before it got consolidated'. That means nothing to us UKers, I'm assuming he means before corporate America took over all the radio stations and made them all play the same thing, but that didn't happen over here.
Then he went onto say how he tells new artists and musicians that it is a gift from god and if we all appreciated that we could get back to 'a golden age'. Hardly a resounding endorcement on the current state of music, I guess he's still interested in banging on about 'real' music like before. Oh, and a video montage that once again failed to get beyond the 80s music, even though they actually talked to Sonny and Michael B from the 90s. But, y'know, it was gracious of him to come all the way to accept the award. [Edited 11/16/06 16:00pm]

I'm thinking Galaxy, Xfm, the many 'Gold' stations around the country... Just a thought.

I guess for us 'die harders' who for the most part are fans through thick and thin then that would have been nice to see; but for the 3 or 4 minutes there was to cover his career then of course they're going to focus on the glory years. It was the same for all of the other inductees featured who are still recording. I'm sure in a Bon Jovi forum someone's complaining that they played Living on a Prayer!! The quotes from Wendy & Lisa, Sonny & Michael, Maceo etc. were pretty good and Prince's demeanour and speech were absolutely class. A great appearance all in all. "Sheeeeeeeeit"

It was nice to hear band mates giving him props - Sonny T and Michael B, man i wish he could hook up with them again. Maceo called him a genius a fair few times and Pharell said that he plays all the instruments better individually than each member of hes touring band. The final word went to Joni Mitchell who ended up saying he throws great parties!!
Prince did say he wished hes band was with him - but then in a moment of blatent plugging said they were in vegas reahursing and that all are invited to the 3121 shows. It was good to hear him give props to some of hes heros which is something hes been doing since around 2000, "i remember the days you could see James Brown/Jimi Hendrix/Carlos Santana and Sly Stone on the same stage - that was before consolidation" He ended by saying it was great to see Patti LaBelle performing and that Joni is someone hes always looked up to.

to be honest i thought it was a refreshing change that Purple Rain wasnt brought up or even clips shown in the montage. This must be a first. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

He did give credit to Joni Mitchell at one point in his speech, although I don't believe it was at the end.

I didnt think it was a bad speach he did sound nervous which he actually admitted.

He could of at least THANKED HIS FANS who have supported him all his career and who do now despite him constantly judging them and being disrepectful.

got to agree with metal orange again. The speech was o.k. for me, the thanks for just o.k as well. He definitely has a huge gripe with corporate america in general although they gave him his start.
