i think since prince likes money so much, he should run for president so he can one day actually have his face printed on legal tender. i mean, you can't get any closer to money than that, can you?

I agree. I wouldn't wish poverty on anyone, but Prince seperates himself when he's put in the world of regular musicians.

His greatness would be more obvious if he led an average garage band.

No. That's the kind of stuff that insecurity tells a person. (Not calling you that)
If he were surrounded by great, he would rise to the occasion.

Poor doesn't mean average. There are many guys here in NYC that play gig to gig just to make it thru the week, but as far as greatness goes, these guys are the real thing. Very few "known guys" can touch a good handful of them.

Right. I meant more with simpler surroundings, not necessarily worse musicians. Take away the lasers, computers, synths, huge band, crazy clothes, basically everything that makes it hard to compare him to anyone but himself.

More like he did with Tom Petty @ RRHOF where there's nothing to distract from the pure music & performance.

It's the same reason virtually everyone who ses him live (in person) is converted to being a fan. When you see him on a human level, it's easier to see the greatness. The farther removed he is, the more you compare him to MJ, Madonna, Britney, and others of "questionable" musicianship.

I agree with you. Simple is better. And though it may seem contradictory I think the lights and FX are a good thing...you can create quiet intense moments with these. They can add impact in a seamless inconspicuous way. They can even create a heightend "scaled back" feel. He still is Prince so some drama is fine...especially with something like Vegas. But, yes it would also be good to see him without any of this...just the music, figuring stuff out, having fun...and with clothes that wrinkle.

At times, it seems he resents peoples' love of his music, and at times, he basks in it.

I love Prince no matter what!!!! Unconditional love to the purple man. His music, his voice....Well, It was his voice that caught my attention in the 1st place at the BET Awards 06 all in the stars. Not the background music. I was diggin it, but it was like anything else I hear. But, the way he say things gives me this freshing sence and smile across my face. I swear I couldn't stop hearing his voice until I started the 1st day of college. It really had an impact on me. Money never did mean anything to me. I spent my fincial aid on buying Prince's older albums from amozon so I can hear how he grew and feel him out through the time periods. Prince changed a whole lot in a short time frame. I guess money=nothing in my opininon. wink

You can't be a rock STAR and be broke. You have to at least front like you're paid. Look at Hammer he's broke and gone like a cloud of dust. You can't be a rock star without cash. Please... if he wasn't rich he wouldn't be Prince. Would you go see him playing in the subway wearing a green plastic jacket with a dirty fur collar and his momma's faded blue suede boots playing for tips into his guitar case. Hell Naw!

Just kidding - My love for Prince is not based on his money, especially since I don't get any of it.

I see what you're saying. Wealth is just another expression of one's character. Prince is rich because he has an insane work ethic. It's not like he won the lottery--he earned his fortune fair and square. He worked hard for it.

But he also has a tendency to bullshit about money, which is lame, makes people not want to buy his albums, and that makes him more anxious and defensive about his financial empire, which causes him to bullshit more about money, which leads to more dishonest lyrics, and on and on...

As brazen and ballsy as he was about sex, Prince sure is squeamish when it comes to money.

Anyway, a more thought-provoking question would be: Would you still love Prince if he weren't TALENTED? Imagine this short untalented weirdo wearing stupid clothes talking voodoo all day long. How long before you just out and out kick his pretentious little ass?
