Did Prince write... Why Should I Love You?
from Kate Bush's excellent The Red Shoes? You see, I always thought he had co-written it with Kate (in whatever sense), but he isn't credited as a writer, just guitar, bass, vocs, and arrangement. Surprised me, but then I know his attitude to writing credits is "fluid". So, co-write or not? It just sounds SO Princey.

I've now got the guitar solo going round and round my head.

Answering my own flippin' questions again!
From the lady herself: Why Should I Love You evolved from an R&B type song. I thought how wonderful it would be to have Prince play guitar... little did I know. I was so excited that he was interested in working on the track, we sent the tapes to him and he sent them back. It appealed so much to my sense of humour when we put up the tapes and there was bass, keyboards, guitar and backing vocals, all working to a funk groove. Some elements of the song were left but we put a lot of work into retrieving the structure I wanted and working with Prince's performances, yet keeping my original conception of it. It was extremely interesting for me and I think the result is quite unusual. Prince is an extraordinary talent ... and a bit clever ... In the time it took me to make one album he had released three albums, completed two world tours, a TV special, various videos and is still a better guitarist than me ...

Anyway, it's awesome, dig it out and have another listen. Allegedly this was the last "Prince" credit for 7 years.

Wow, how sad does this thread make me look.

You've got your own answer.
Kate Bush wrote the song. She sent recordings to Prince. Prince undertook considerable work on the recordings, to such an extent that Kate Bush had to work a great deal to retrieve her original composition / concept from the reworking. Prince was credited for his musical contribution: http://en.wikipedia.org/w...es_(album) but not as composer. You can also read Michael Koppleman's take on the story here: http://gaffa.org/moments/2_2j.html An excerpt from Uptown's article based on an interview with Koppelman here: http://www.uptown.se/2005...bush.shtml and listen to Koppelman's experiences (Podcast's 9 and 10 for example) here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/lolife .
