Defending Prince...

This has been discussed before on the org, somewhat. But my question is; Do any of you find yourselves defending Prince, from negative comments or views, that your friends/peers/parents may have about him?

In particular, I remember in High School. This jerk Leonard was blurting all the reasons he thought Prince was a 'flamin' faggot' as he put it. It was a certain song lyric he misinterpreted (which is most often the case)

"Somebody's, somebody" (Emancipation Disc1);

"I need to feel someone beside me I cannot be alone no, no..."

This jerk thought Prince said; "I need to feel someone inside me..."

We continued to debate the rest of that week. He brought two songs (correct me if I'm wrong on their real meaning) "If I Was You Girlfriend" and "I Love U In Me" He actually listened to the songs and had written down what he thought was clearly, "Prince coming out of the closet"

I clarified...In the song If I Was Your Girlfriend, Prince is envious of his girlfriend's best friend. Because they did things together, that her and Prince didn't do; like undress in front of each other, run to her when she was hurt and go to the movies and cry together, just to name a few ex. Prince wanted the same openess and intimacy...am I right?

I Love U In Me... isn't a gesture, that he wants a man to penetrate him, (which Len suggested). Prince says; she says that when he's making love to her. Further, Prince does actually mean that he loves her in him; meaning they love each other and she's in his heart

I guess he ran out of evidence after that, or just gave up. I mention this because, I saw Leonard recently and he told me the he was indeed homosexual. I told him "congratulations" he looked confused. Then I said, "I'm glad you found 'The Truth'

Yes, I sometimes find myself defending Prince.
I remember one time in particular. I was in high school (about 10th grade) and I had on my "I heart Prince" button, and some football player said Prince was a faggot and that he couldn't stand him. Then I said something like "You're the one who spends every afternoon jumping on guys with tight pants or standing behind some guy who's bent over and trying to get his ball!" Needless to say he got pissed and walked towards me as if to hit me (I was all of 90 lbs at the time). I stuck my chest out and took a step forward like I really thought I could kick his ass. Then suddenly he backed down and walked away.
I suspect there were several other atheletes standing behind me and threating to hurt him if he hurt me.

There were also a few times at the second Celebration where I internally said if I saw certain people out on Audubon Rd. I was going to cause them physical harm because of the things they were saying about Prince. I didn't want to start shit on Paisley Park property out of respect for Prince, but it was hard not to with some of those knuckelheads!

I still defend Prince everyday...People at work still give me a hard time. I'm so used to it though. People have been giving me a hard time since 1981. It dosen't bother me like it used to. I'd get pretty pissed, but now I figure oh well...

I just got to the point where I figured if people got off by thinking Prince was gay, or some freakazoid fetishist, or WHATEVER, then who am I to get in the way of their happiness? What some party-poop thinks of the musicians I like isn't going to spoil my enjoyment of the music, so if someone thinks Prince is some raging sexaholic beastiality case, then hey, more power to 'em...just get outta MY face with all that mess.

It seemed to me that if they couln't dig him for what he was or dislike him for a good reason, then they were pointing out the limits of their perception and they could have a horrible repressed life WITHOUT me. smile

Yeah, only when someone calls him shit. If people just say they don't like him then fine. I only defend if he is attacked, I don't ask people if they like him and then when they say, 'well, actually, what has he done recently?' or something like that, start to defend him. I can understand that. When someone trashes the man who has provided me with countless hours of musical entertainment (to say the least) then I will defend him. He may be wrong for them, but he's right for me.

If you ask me, defending him is one of the joys of being a true Prince fan/fam or whatever you call it. I don't think Prince ever expected everyone to catch on to what he was or is doing. That is the same way I am I don't mind if others don't get it I never want to be considered the norm in this world anyway.

Prince will never get the respect that he deserves
4 his music.
Just the other day, i mentioned to one of my friends
that Prince was releasing a jazz CD soon...
his response: "Yeah, he can play, BUT he aint no
(forgot his reference, but was some sax player that
i never heard of)" WTF???
IMO, Prince is the baddest dude to EVER play music.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I used to. But I have discovered rather early (I'm 19) that it just doesn't make sense. Let them talk. Let them laugh. Simply don't care about it.

...besides: the music shuts (almost) everybody up. [sorry for the editing.]

So true adorable2! It is a joy defending him - actually once I get through to those who are ignorant to him, it's more like enlightening them. I always get the same response once they "get it" about the Slave/symbol thing - they all agree that they think he is brilliant and would totally go to one of his concerts, actually a few of my friends did see him in Toronto and were totally blown away.
THERE IS DEFINATE JOY IN THAT

I don't think the song is about envy ... it is about wanting the same openness and intimacy, but he is not jealous about others having it with her - well at least that is how I interpret it smile

on the topic:
I never defend Prince. I don't care what other people say about him, or about me liking his music so much.

But those who do defend him scare me to be honest, they sound like they are on a mission, almostlike converting people into some religion...

That's not true or fair. Alot of people get the wrong information about Prince from various sources, or the information is passed down like the telephone game. When there's a juicy stupid rumour, people love to thrive on negativity. For those of us who seem to know (hopefully smile) the truth, I just try to set them straight. It's not converting - I don't care if you still want to slam Prince afterwards, you have a right to your opinion. queen smile

No i dont defend him...right know i can not even defend him cause i dont understand him these days.
Nobody talks about him these days anyway.

About those songs: I think the same about the songs as u do, well, i used 2...That guy Leonerd might have a point though lol...i never looked at it that way...
The songs have a diffirent meaning for every one. Gay ppl might see gay stuff in the songs. Maybe Leanard is gay.
And what if Prince would be gay? I am almost sure he is Bi. Or Better, i am almost sure he had sex with a guy.

filtered over the music system...Could it be?
YES!!! It's PRINCE!!!
They are playing "KISS" and everybody started jammin'
and talking about how great Prince is as a musician
and how they miss him on the radio.
So I got on my soapbox and preached!
He is still great!
Go to his site at NPG Music Club...
Go and buy TRC...Listen to 1+1+1 is three...
Be on the lookout for a live release!!!
I had quite an audience.
Of course I waited until Kiss finished playing
to sermonize the music.

I defend Prince ALL the time. Yesterday, I was talking to my class about Prince (I had asked them to tell me something unique about them, so I told them what was unique about me was that I liked Prince). One girl flat out said that she hated Prince and someone else asked me, "WHY do you like Prince?" I tried to explain that he had always been a part of my musical life and that as a virtuoso musician, producer and arranger, his aesthetic appealed to me. I don't know if anyone understood, though...

I think the only way they'd understand is to expose them to what you consider his best music since he's been out of the spotlight. When an artist is doing something that isn't automatically visible/audible to mainstream listeners (mainly radio) they either think he's stopped making music, or that his music isn't "good enough" to be featured on the radio. It can't ONLY be because they think he's a freak, because he was a freak when he was selling boatloads of records in the 80s.

Prince's 90s output is erratic, but as a whole there are diamonds within some of that coal.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Yeah, I think Leonard was actually hoping that Prince was homosexual, so that he'd have an artist to relate to and help him out with his own identity. When I blurted to him recently, that "I'm glad he found "The Truth" he knew I was talking about the Prince song. I think he might even be a fan now eek

I've found that you don't really have to defend him from anyone with an appreciation for real art, genuine MUSIC, or talent. Just about all of the criticism I've heard of him involves his appearance, eccentricity or provocative lyrics.

I took some heat for the Lovesexy album cover, the "take anyone boy or girl" line from AnnaStesia, the name change, the assless pants, the dry humping Arsenio "Daddy Pop" performance and any number of things, all from people who worship Bowie, Jagger, Queen, Judas Priest and Pete Townsend, and all the while confident that I was into the REAL "alternative" music.

If the best you can muster up is a critique of his sexuality, then I'm afraid you're gonna' have to do better than that, and look in the mirror while you're at it. I like my rockstars a little left of center, original and off color anyhow. Why else be one?

REAL musicans, artists and origianl thinkers KNOW he's the real deal. Even his critics will always say "he's talented, but..."

No.. not at all.. I can care less what people think!

I have seen and read other sites for michael jackson .. which it is one big "Cult Following".. making excuses for everything..spinning everything the best way possible and not even talking about any music?

pretty sick if you ask me.

rumor has it (possibly) MJ is going back to Sony? I guess NO other label was going to give him anything, and now MJ is crawling back??? Well on a few MJ sites they were so insane about "sony & tommy" that some of the post almost came down to hunting them down and doing aweful things to the personally???

NOW that MJ change his tune and forgot "racism, black artist of the past, devils, ect" These same sites (are slowly) slanting to what the new angle MJ is putting out.

Total Cult!

* Thats why I like "The Org" because Prince does allot right and yes we all discuss everything he does wrong! smile
