it's funny how the folks who ran these fanzines eventually had a falling out with Prince...

***Eileen Murton---didn't she get pissed at Prince and shut down the Controversy magazine? I think this mag made a huge mistake when they decided to become Prince's "official" fan magazine. They should have remained independent.

***Linda Everett---in the late 80s,she contributed to Controversy. But she had a bitter argument/disagreement with Prince in the early 90s."He's a real nasty person" she told me.She then sold her entire collection of albums, posters, tapes, videos, etc.

***Diana Dawkins---shortly after Prince sued Uptown, she shut down her own Prince Family newsletter.I remember calling the hotline in the late 90s and she sounded extremely bitter as she said "This will be our last newsletter".She later sold all of her Prince stuff.I wonder if she ever forgave him? LOL

Controversy & Uptown.

I almost bought an issue of Head,
but then quickly realised that it wasn't about Prince.

Nor was it a 'fanzine'.

Wow. Linda Everett. Now that is a name I haven't heard for a while. I remember hearing a recording of her rambling into someone's phone yelling about being the 'queen of paisley f***ing park' and tearing into this guy. It was so funny! He said it was her, but since I never spoke to her, I have no claim about it's authenticity but it was really funny.

I forgot about them! I helped them create an article about Wendy and Lisa based on one I worked on for UPTOWN and they were cool enough to thank me in the article. Loved that! Good magazine, good vibe.

Lots of covers from these mags (like '7', 'Dream Nation', 'Controversy' and more besides) can be found in the Covers: Magazines section of the gallery. There's loads of 'em...

I agree. all the best. I always enjoyed her work and passion. In a field that little money is made on being a fan, she jumped in anyway to make sure that people kept informed. In fact, I still have every issue of Controversy, including the early ones that were basically xeroxes!

Best wishes, indeed, to Eileen... Controversy was a splendid magazine, and certainly encouraged me towards getting involved when I saw adverts for the fanzine Interactive.

It's interesting reading this thread about how many clubs closed with a 'and they were so pissed off with Prince...' The copyright thing with regards the symbol and the reaction to NPS had an impact on Seven thang in Australia too, I think.

And yet, here we all are... all these years later... still intrigued by this musician... man, he MUST be good! lol

there was a Simon Quinn who worked on that Interactive fanzine who
sold some of the worst bootleg dvd copies i ever had the displeasure of
paying money for.

I loved the Prince Family Newsletter. It was an amazing gift in the mailbox every 2 weeks to be able to wrap up all things Prince. I have about half of them, and I promised DavidEye that I'd tell him which ones I have so he can get me my missing issues for my book research.

The Prince Family newsletter was GREAT! Do you remember in the summer of 1996 when Diana surprised us by sending us a copy of the "Dinner With Delores" cassette promo single? She enclosed it with a copy of the newsletter.

DavidEye? I wonder whatever happened to him confuse

I still have my tape, as well as the eye Hate U promo single I won from that one contest the newsletter had. I used to love getting the newsletter, it was really something I looked foreward to smile

Yeah, I was a regular caller to The Prince Family, too. I looked forward to the newsletters like everybody else and just HAD to call in between lest I miss something important. The Prince Family Newsletter was how I hooked up with what eventually became LovesexyDC. I wrote something to the newsletter and my friend Kathy who was kinda just getting a fan group together called me. So it turned out to be a very important component in my "Prince life." There are some things about that time that still feel better than what we do on the Internet now.
And yes, I DID get the "Dinner With Delores" cassette (and I still have it!)

it is so fun to remember this and hear about the joy it brought others. It was a really great time to be a Prince fan. The internet was just starting up, the glut of magazines, the fantastic tours, the greatest albums... all around it was a prime time to be a fan. Then he started sueing people for using the symbol that HE supplies! hahahaha. I am so glad that UPTOWN sued back AND WON! That is why Alex Hahn (UPTOWN's pro bono lawyer) will always have my respect. Someone out there had to stop Prince from completely destroying his fanbase and I don't think people understand how it was done. Let me remind everyone that Alex, pretty much single handedly, stopped Prince from sueing everyone. Without him, we would have UPTOWN, etc.

Also, does anyone remember the daily email list that was circulating? Was it called PPML or something like that! That was a blast!

I have one issue that was released in the summer of 1991,a few months before 'Diamonds and Pearls' was released and many of the articles are about the upcoming album. There's an interesting analysis of the song "Old Friends 4 Sale".I never got any other issues of this mag.I think it was based in Philadelphia?

I went for job interview with a proposed music/current affairs magazine based in London... I got the job, but the magazine was pulled before launch... hey-ho...

I'll always remember the boss's reaction when I told him I used to write for a magazine about Prince... "A magazine about just one musician?" I was about to reply when one of the other journalists on the interview board lightly touched him on arm and said, "Yeah... There's enough for a whole magazine about Prince..." Nothing more was said.

It was a lovely moment, and a testimony to Prince's cache at the time.

Hmmm..... Chris Dawson. Some of us here on the org remember him only for all the bad stuff. His sloppy handling and false advertising of a fan Party (aftershow?) which led to his being questioned by the police, many of us never got refunds. Then later he took money for a Prince fanzine (Dream Nation?) which folded after one issue, again no refunds. Those who feel ripped off by him do not remember him fondly. I think even Eileen Murton had disagreements with him and that's why they parted company. I also remember Chris bad mouthing Prince in the press after his meeting, giving the impression that he is an arrogant show off. I think he felt that Prince owed him something!

I would like point out that this bit is wrong It was run by a guy called David Powell from Walsall. David tried his best in producing the magazine (Dream Nation Ran for around 2 yrs) all by himself with help from like minded people he even did some Prince Partys which I went to and had fun even Madhouse music went along those where the days, but like Chris Dawson both where charming and owe me money for non events.

Eileen Did well on the MPLS convention of 91 (D&P) was released whilst we were in MPLS and we all had limos to take us to the Glam slam for the release party BLISS.

and whilst im here Didnt Chris Leave Controversy to set up the Revolution after an argument with Eileen?
[Edited 11/17/06 4:55am]

I stand corrected. I read on here that Chris Dawson was involved in Dream Nation but my information was obviously incorrect.
But all that means is that 2 different guys took my money and ran...
