Anyone notice how funky the bass on 'Partyup' is?

I know the groove for this song md came up with but Prince laid down and amazing bass part on this track.

It's a really percussive dominant sound; it fucking rocks!

Wasn't there some tidbit on NPGMC about how Prince "bought" that song from Morris Day because the bass line was so funky? I forget the specifics...Org Historians, help!

well dammit, gimme the rest? was it the drums that made prince buy the song? cuz i know morris was a drummer and not a bassist...but half of 'em are multi-instrumentalists anyway, so i confuse easily.

siddown, shuddup and listen: ol' boy didn't buy the song off of morris because of the bass line--IIRC, he dug the song overall. i ain't at home right now so i can't reach for my copy of dmsr to double-check, but that's the basics of it. boris or langebleu will prolly pop up on here to verify this eventually.

hmmm, i remember some weird thread started by a PP at NPGMC about this story, and i swear it had to do with a specific instrumental part in the song....either bass or drums, and i coulda sworn it was bass. someone'll surely remember what i'm talking about...

YES.. I remember reading in a PRINCE Book that "Party Up" was Morris Day's and Prince really liked it sooooo Prince struck a "DEAL" with Morris and set up the group "The Time" 4 Morris in exchange 4 the song...

Morris came up with the groove(on drums).

prince played the bass to the same rythm, added guitar and wrote the lyrics.

The Vault: "Partyup was based on a groove that Morris Day had demoed in Prince's home studio. Prince took a liking to Day's track, and he wrote lyrics and re-recorded it as 'Partyup.' In return for using it as his own song on Dirty Mind, Prince offered Day $10,000 or to help him get a record deal. Day refected the money offer despite the fact that he was washing cars to supplement his income at the time. True to his word, Prince repaid the favour by creating The Time around Day in early 1981. Another song on Dirty Mind, 'Uptown' was created around a bass line that Andre Cymone came up with; he isn't credited on Dirty Mind."
