I love 'Under the Cherry Moon!' smile

I wouldn't say it's alot better than 'Graffiti Bridge,' though. I like them both for different reasons.

Definately one of my favorite movies!! Prince at his best. The musical score/soundtrack known as Parade will go down in history as a great work. Generations from now will be listening to it..I predict!!! razz

Sorry to X-post, but this is what I said the last time this topic was discussed here:

Objectively, Under the Cherry Moon was horrible! Hey, it's okay! We all enjoy seeing Prince clown around throughout the movie, but it's really a lousy film. For the best review of everything that went wrong with it, see DMSR Chapter 10.

For me, the film lacks style and cohesion, and much of the acting was horrible. The black and white approach might have worked in the hands of a different director, but it comes off as contrived and starkly out of place in Prince's hands. Scenes are awkward. The movie feels amateurish, and not in that "good" way sometimes seen in some quasi-documentaries or independent films.

What the film desperately needed was great direction. Prince wanted Scorsese to direct he movie, but he apparently declined. As far as I'm concerned, Prince should have hired a true film director rather than trying to pull the whole thing off himself. According to DMSR, Prince was involved in many other projects at the same time, and it clearly shows.

Face it, the film was a cinematic disaster, and Prince was completely aware of that fact. According to DMSR, "Prince realized halfway through the production that the film wasn't going to come out as he had conceived, 'It became damage control.'" In another passage, Prince is described as "lying on the floor, face down, all night, repeating over and over that he hated the movie."

Well, I don't blame him. I can love Prince as a musician and songwriter (maybe even an actor in certain roles), but film directing is not his strongest suit.

Hey I love this movie! I think it might be the music that tips it over GB for me. I know the acting is not great but it has a whole feel about this movie that I like.

UTCM is a great, silly, funny, quirky movie that's fun to watch, nothing more nothing less. It shouldn't be taken any more serious than that. If it is, then too bad for you.

I agree with your assessment.'Cherry Moon' is a FUN movie.Just sit back and enjoy the laughs as they come, the great songs as you hear them, and the beautiful French Riviera scenery. We know it's not Oscar-worthy material, but I've seen much worse.

Im serious, I didn't expect it to create such a big hurrah, but it wasn't horrifying like some paint it out 2 be.

The plot was cute & it was quite funny, especially when "Tricky" was saying 2 "Christopher": "U did it w/ Mary's mom, U did it w/ Mary's mom!" That had me rolling! lol

It is my absolute favorite Prince movie & like I said b 4:
I like it more than PR, so johnwoo me!

Yeah I love Under The Cherry Moon not because I think it deserved an Oscar, but because of the plot. I really can't imagine it trying to be too serious and uptight because that really isn't Prince's personality. Even when he tries to be real serious, there is always something said or done that makes you laugh. I also liked the play between Christopher and Tricky. That film because of the black and white scenery, the costumes and the dialect leaves me feeling like I'm in it's whole different world space and time let alone country.
I'm an org elitist... totally unapproachable.

Agree with both of you. The scenes that are not supposed to be funny are and vise versa. It's good cheeezzze-whiz.

I like how "loose" prince is in Cherry Moon.
In PR & GB he is too busy trying to be
moody. As Cristopher Tracy he is all over the
place and all of his goofy actions really
flow out of him. That swaggering walk! biggrin
He pouted his way through Grafitti Bridge barf

I liked UTCM alot. prince was good, and jerome! also kristin thomas scott. i think people didnt like it because it was quite different for prince, and the music was sparse. i felt it was sophisticated, and romantic!
May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love. hug kisses
